Kafka is a 32-year-old man, who despite his age, is still motivated to join the Defense Force and fight against the Kaijus and the terror that they have brought in his world. His motivation comes from the fact that his home and his school were destroyed by a Kaiju when he was a kid. But life is not fair to him as despite multiple attempts he fails to join the Defense Force.

On the other hand, his childhood friend, Mina Ashiro, who also experienced the same horror of getting her home destroyed because of the attack, manages to crack the Defense Force on the first attempt and quickly becomes the Captain of the Third Division of the Defense Force, making her one of the strongest individuals in the organization.
