Hollywood is riddled with more heartbreaks and tragedies than it is with stories of success, and anyone who’s spent enough time in the industry knows you either make it or you don’t. Well, Katie Holmes was fully prepared for the latter. In fact, she’d surrendered to the notion that her career was over before it even began.

Katie Holmes Believed She Didn’t Stand A Chance in Acting

25 years ago, Katie Holmes first kicked off her acting career with a mere supporting role in an adaptation of Ricky Moody’s The Ice Storm. Ever since then, Holmes, 44, has starred in films like 2005’s Batman Begins and even directed a handful of projects like the rom-com Alone Together which premiered just last year.

However, though she has fared decently well in the industry throughout her career, there was a time when the Dawson’s Creek star was certain her future in Hollywood would be a black hole. Not long ago, when Holmes appeared on The Tonight Show, she reminisced about her first-ever audition for 1997’s The Ice Storm and how she had no hope of getting any projects after that.

“Well, I was 17 and I remember we came to New York, my mom and I. And we shot it and I thought, ‘Oh, I mean, this is what I want to do. Great.’ And I went home and I was putting myself on tape for different auditions and I wasn’t really getting anything. And I thought, ‘Oh, well that might be it. You know, that might be all there is.'”

Even so, Holmes remained unbothered about her future in the industry that had seemingly dwindled into oblivion and was readily accepting of the fact that it just didn’t work out for her.

“But it was okay, ’cause I was like, ‘You know what, that’s okay. That was an amazing experience and I can like, tell my grandkids and I’ll be fine.'[…]I was like, ‘That’s cool.’ I mean, I wanted more jobs, but I was like, ‘Don’t be greedy.'”

In her defense though, she didn’t know she was going to fall for someone of Tom Cruise‘s caliber whose stardom is simply off the charts.

A Fairytale Romance With A Bitter Ending

While Holmes did make a name for herself in the business, her association with the Mission: Impossible star naturally played an enormous role in amassing her unbridled popularity. She was, after all, the girl who Tom Cruise had fallen head over heels in love with.

Following a whirlwind romance, Holmes and Cruise got engaged just a few months after they got together in 2005, and a year later, the couple became parents to daughter Suri Cruise. Shortly after they welcomed a new member to their family, the two tied the knot in 2006 at what transpired to be a lavish ceremony in Italy. Theirs was a marriage straight out of a dream, all red hearts and aching devotion.

The Top Gun: Maverick star’s relationship with Holmes was highly publicized with the media and tabloids singing about it endlessly. So, naturally, their shocking split which came after half a decade of their marriage, ended up making headlines as well. While both the stars have remained tight-lipped about their divorce at large, it is believed the Miss Meadows star parted ways from her then-beau to fortify their daughter from Cruise’s affiliation with Scientology.
