DC shocked fans last year after announcing a Constantine sequel in the works, but it seems like a pipe dream now as Keanu Reeves reveals he is uncertain the project will push through. It has been nearly two decades since the John Wick actor starred as the occult detective, and the drastic changes under the new DC enterprise might also affect the project’s progress.

The sequel’s plot, says writer Akiva Goldsman, revolves around Reeves’ character, John Constantine, trying to maintain “the barrier between earth and the evil creatures.” Will the detective be able to keep his promise then?

Keanu Reeves Is Now Unsure If He Will Return As John Constantine

In an interview with CinemaBlend, Keanu Reeves discussed the progress of the long-delayed movie, Constantine 2. The actor only commented that they are attempting to make it happen:

We’re trying. I don’t know if it’s going to happen.”

He also stated that he would love to wear blond hair to portray the character as close as possible to the source material.

I know I’m playing a different Constantine than the comic, you know, and I do get in a bit of trouble for that… I don’t know if I’d look good as a blond. Hopefully, I get to do it, but I don’t know.”

Reeves is hopeful that the Elseworlds movie would push through, as this would give John Constantine the chance to return to the screen. Constantine director Francis Lawrence also told Collider early this month of the prospect of a second installment due to fans’ demand:

It’s something that we’ve been talking about since we made ‘Constantine’ because we all loved it. So, we’ve been talking about it, talking about it, talking about it. All the DC [properties], because Vertigo is part of DC, that sort of like the control of those properties got complicated with Warner Bros. with DC, with JJ [Abrams]’s deal, you know, all those kinds of things.”

The director noted that they needed to get “some sort of control” over Constantine first, before proceeding with the project. He said that several things are making it complicated at the moment, and they are trying to figure out how to resolve this issue.

Keanu Reeves is open to reprising his Constantine role despite the challenges and even cancelation reports from Warner Bros. The actor spoke with James Gunn a few weeks ago about the planned sequel, and while he considered the possibility of it as “an open playground,” there is no surefire way to tell if Constantine 2 will happen or not.

As James Gunn and Peter Safran overhaul the entire DC world, multiple projects have been announced. Fans could only hope that the online campaign for the Constantine sequel would be strong enough to convince the DC executives to give it another shot. In this case, Constantine 2 could potentially transfer under the Elseworlds banner.

Another reason for this delay is that an HBO Max series involving Constantine is reportedly being developed with a different actor.
