Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, directed by Wes Ball, was released earlier this month and is having a splendid time at the box office as well as among critics. The Planet of the Apes franchise has moved forward in time with some new characters. But at the same time, it has managed to keep the nostalgia of the spirit from its previous iterations.
Starring Owen Teague in the lead role, alongside Freya Allan, and Kevin Durand, among others, the movie is making a lot of buzz. Franchise alums like Matt Reeves and Andy Serkis also gave it their stamp of approval with overwhelmingly positive reviews. And talks of a sequel to this new storyline are already making the rounds.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes on Its Way to Make a New Record
Made on a budget of $160 million, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has managed to earn a total of $237.5 million worldwide so far. With only two weeks since its release in the United States, the movie is moving at lightning speed and is looking to cross the coveted $500 million mark soon. So far, in 2024, only three other movies have managed to reach this feat – Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part 2, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and Kung Fu Panda 4.
With how the movie seems to be spending the weeks at the box office, it won’t be too long until it grosses over $500 million. The movie made $22.2 million on Day 1, with a worldwide opening of $129 million. On the Rotten Tomatoes website, it has an 81% Tomatometer rating, and a 79% audience score, with some pretty favorable reviews from critics as well as industry elites.

Fans are already asking for a sequel announcement. And with how things are currently, it might not be long before we get official confirmation of a sequel. Director Wes Ball already said he would be happy to add more to the canon, and fans definitely want more content to enjoy.
