This year welcomes the fourth part of the Planet of the Apes franchise- Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Though only speculation, it seems like the box office won’t be so fond of the apes. Inspired by the literary work of French author Pierre François Marie Louis Boulle, the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise is all set to release its fourth movie.
Directed by Wes Ball, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes features Owen Teague as the lead actor alongside Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy. Distributed by 20th Century Studios, the film’s trailer has already crossed 13 million views. However, despite the franchise’s fame, the movie might not make a great deal at the box office.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Might Experience a Low Box Office Collection
One of the unique and acknowledged franchises of all time, Planet of the Apes, is back with its new installation called Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Even though every movie of the series has been a highly anticipated one, the fourth release seems a bit loose.
Recently, in The Hot Mic podcast with Jeff Sneider and John Rocha, some latent facts came out regarding the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Jeff Sneider in the video revealed that he came to know about a poor test screening result regarding the movie through his secret source. During the podcast, Sneider said: “They heard that the movie is a stinker.”
Sneider further mentioned that there is nothing special in the trailer of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes that can grab a new audience’s attention. If someone hasn’t seen the prequels to the movie, there is nothing much in the trailer of the upcoming movie that can make him/her curious enough. Rocha even mentioned that the failure at the box office could be due to the absence of established actors.
Planet of the Apes Franchise Might Be Experiencing a Decline in Box-Office Collection
The surface picture may show that the box office collection of the past three movies of the Planet of the Apes franchise is really good, but the collection-to-budget ratio says something else. The first movie of the franchise, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, had a budget of 93 million US dollars and its worldwide collection came out as 481 million US dollars. The collection here is 5x the budget.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the second movie, earned around $708.8 million over a budget of $170 million. The collection here is 4x the budget. The third movie, War of the Planet of the Apes, collected around $490.7 million over a budget of $150 million. The collection here is 3x the budget.
On comparing the collection to budget ratio, it is quite clear that with every new movie, the franchise is making comparatively less profit. No doubt there’s a high chance that the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes might witness a further decline in the profit margin.
