Four decades later, the film’s success has transitioned into a franchise with five movies, two television shows, and a bunch of video games. The latest in the series is “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” which features an ensemble cast including Kumail Nanjiani, who compared the movie with 80s animated show “The Real Ghostbusters”.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will be home to some really talented cast members like Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Bill Murray, Carrie Coon and Kumail Nanjiani. Nanjiani in particular is very excited to be a part of the movie, as he was a huge fan of Ghostbusters while growing up.

He took to X to express that “Ghostbusters was my first favorite movie. I remember the first time I watched it. It felt like someone had made a movie just for me”. He further revealed that he was also a huge fan of The Real Ghostbusters animated series and that the makers wanted to make the movie a long episode of the animated series.

“Also I am a huge fan of The Real Ghostbusters (the animated series) and that show was a point of reference for this movie. The filmmakers wanted to make a long episode of the animated series. So if you love that show as I do, be excited.”

The Real Ghostbusters was an animated spin-off/sequel to the 1984 movie. It ran from September 1986 to October 1991. Created by Joe Medjuck and Michael C. Gross, the show had a total of 7 seasons and 140 episodes and was met with critical acclaim.

The show followed the adventures of the four original Ghostbusters. Chasing and Capturing the rogue ghosts and Spooks of New York City in animation was a treat fans did not know they wanted. While not many remember the show, it is certain that even almost four decades later, the show’s legacy is inspiring talented filmmakers.

To combat this global threat, the experienced and the new Ghostbusters must combine their skills and knowledge to save the world. The movie’s description on Sony’s website reads:

“In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family decide to leave Summerville, Oklahoma and go back to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – and help the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level! But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.”

If there’s one thing fans can understand from the movie description, it’s that the Ghostbusters will be hugely entertaining to watch. The movie will have its worldwide premiere on March 14, 2024, in the New York City and will officially release on March 22, 2024.
