Following Kung Fu Panda 4’s kick-ass start through its first two weekends, the DreamWorks franchise made its way to a pretty major milestone. With four titles under the renowned franchise banner, the animated films have now surpassed the $2B mark at the box office. But while this achievement turned out to be groundbreaking for DreamWorks, it simultaneously created a huge obstacle for Timothée Chalamet’s Dune 2.

Blowing past $200M following the first two weekends, Kung Fu Panda 4 earned a massive collection against a very reasonable $85M production budget. This staggering growth has turned out to be a grave situation for Timothée Chalamet’s sci-fi thriller Dune: Part Two.

Kung Fu Panda 4 Blew Past the $200M Milestone

Premiering in theaters on March 8, the fourth installment in DreamWorks’ animated franchise – Kung Fu Panda 4 continued the story of Dragon Warrior Po, who is pitted against an evil sorceress called the Chameleon. With Jack Black leading the cast once again alongside Dustin Hoffman, James Hong, Bryan Cranston, and more, the movie made a grand opening at the box office.

Kicking butts through its first two weekends, the film passed a pretty major milestone, as reported by Deadline. Making a domestic opening of $22.2M, and a global debut at $80.5M, Kung Fu Panda 4 the Jack Black-starrer continued to bag millions over the weekend. Topping the charts and taking in over $200M worldwide, against its reasonable $85M production budget, the fourth sequel helped DreamWorks make an awful lot of money.

According to SlashFilm reports, the box office achievement donned by Kung Fu Panda 4 has helped DreamWorks make over $2B collectively, from the four installments. With 2011’s Kung Fu Panda 2 making the highest-grossing entry with $664.8M worldwide, the animated franchise has now made a significant amount of money from the films, as well as through home videos and merchandising.

Timothée Chalamet’s Dune: Part Two Faces Major Hurdle

However, while Kung Fu Panda 4 makes a grand start and achieves groundbreaking success for DreamWorks, the film also ends up becoming a challenging obstacle for Timothée Chalamet‘s Dune: Part Two. Although Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi sequel held strong in its sophomore session, the movie is now falling short at the box office, perhaps because of the animated movie’s performance.

Bagging $81M during the domestic opening weekend, Timothée Chalamet’s Dune: Part Two crossed the $200M milestone overseas. Finally reaching $367.5M globally, Denis Villeneuve‘s magnum opus made a great start. However, with the progress being marked by the Jack Black-starrer, Dune 2 is significantly facing obstacles at the box office.

Since both movies are yet to enjoy their theatre run for a few more days, it is creating a nail-biting suspense for Warner Bros/Legendary Entertainment’s film, against the steadily rising DreamWorks sequel. Despite serving two majorly different genres, Kung Fu Panda 4 is turning out to be a huge obstacle for Dune 2. Now, it’s just a matter of time until we get to know which film eventually won the box office race.
