Kurt Russell has done some very interesting and big named roles, all ranging far and wide to add to his talent as an actor. He has already played the father of a famous superhero. He played the infamous Ego, the father of Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord. All his skills are shown by how prevalent he is in his work.
Although, there can be times when actors choose to not take some significant roles for one reason or another. One such incident happened to be with a movie that had the hand of none other than Zack Snyder. The movie happened to be a foundational piece that benefitted various people involved in the movie. However, Russell chose to stay out of the movie.
Kurt Russell Was Almost Superman’s Dad
Man of Steel was a movie that not only uplifted the successful career of Henry Cavill, but also benefitted Zack Snyder’s fame. The role of Jonathan Clark was one that was extremely important for the movie and for Clark Kent as a character. Kurt Russell had been amongst the many names who were considered for the role. However, it ultimately was taken by Kevin Costner. The actor did an incredible job as Superman’s foster father and he gained a lot of praise for the same.
Kurt Russell could have gotten the role had it not been for Snyder’s vision. The director was very clear on the fact that the tone of the movie had to reflect on the cast as well. If the cast could not represent the movie then that would prove to be an issue. Such is the case for why he was so adamant about having Warner Bros. Discovery approve of Cavill’s Superman. The director saw that Costner was much better suited for the role of Jonathan Kent instead of Russell.
Kurt Russell Rejected Another Iconic Superhero Dad
Perhaps Kurt Russell had a knack for playing dads of superheroes as there was not one, but two different fathers he missed out on. Commissioner James Gordon, father of Barbara Gordon, better known as Batgirl or Oracle. The actor was looking towards playing Commissioner Gordon in Batman Begins. Although during the movie there was not as heavy a focus on him being a father, if at all.
The role ultimately became Gary Oldman’s and his dynamics with Christian Bale’s Batman were extraordinary. From Jonathan Kent to James Gordon, Russell finally debuted in the superhero world with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as Ego.
