Sony Pictures Entertainment owns the rights to Marvel’s most profitable superhero, Spider-Man. With Tom Holland’s version of Spider-Man becoming a huge success among fans, the studio has finally decided to expand its universe with Madame Web.
Dakota Johnson will star as the titular character in the standalone origin movie of the popular comic book character. Apart from Johnson, there were many rumored actors to play crucial characters in Madame Web, including Sydney Sweeney, who is Spider-Woman.
Does Madame Web Feature Sydney Sweeney as Spider-Woman?
Until a few hours ago, Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter/Spider-Woman was one of the biggest rumors in the fandom. However, there was no conclusive truth about the rumor. Well, the rumor has become a reality following the release of Madame Web’s first trailer on Sony Pictures Entertainment’s YouTube channel.
The trailer is just a couple of seconds longer than the three-minute mark and primarily focuses on Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web. But apart from that, it also features Sweeney as Spider-Woman.
Considering the film will feature an all-female lead cast, it’s a huge step in the right direction for Sony Pictures Entertainment. Sweeney has a huge fanbase following her portrayal of Cassie Howard in the hit HBO drama Euphoria.
Sony will hope that Sweeney’s massive fan-following fills the seats in theaters. The movie is rumored to be releasing next year but is yet to receive a conclusive release date.
What Will Madame Web be About?
As the title of the movie suggests, it will focus on the life of Cassandra Webb, who later becomes Marvel’s iconic character, Madame Web. Following an incident, Web awakens her clairvoyant powers.
But that’s just the tip of Madame Web’s overpowered abilities as a mutant. Apart from the ability to see into the future, Web can also use telepathy to read other people’s minds, among other abilities.
As for the plot of the movie, it will most likely focus on the transformation of Cassandra Webb into Madame Webb. Her primary foe will be a Spider-Man-like villain in Ezekiel “Zeke” Sims.
Sims previously made an appearance as Spider-Therapist in the 2023 animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. However, Sims’ official live-action debut will be in Madame Web.
All things considered, the movie has the potential to be a success at the box office with a fresh storyline for fans to enjoy. A key reason for its potential success will be staying true to the comics.
In the trailer, many noticed that Spider-Woman has a comic-accurate costume, which is something that’s beloved among comics aficionados. With that said, Madame Web is seemingly headed towards a successful path.
