PUBG is big business around the world with it being one of the biggest and most influential Battle Royale games of the past decade. Some would argue that it started the current craze of games that Fortnite went on to popularise. Either way, whichever way you fall on that particular argument, it’s undeniable how successful the game is. This is further cemented by the latest collaboration between PUBG and action director Sam Hargrave, most well-known for Extraction & Extraction 2.
PUBG Gets into Films, Albeit Short This Time
Video game films have always been big business, with Hollywood attempting to capitalize on the crossover between video game fans and movie fans. Look no further than the many Resident Evil adaptations, or the more recent The Super Mario Bros. Movie for both good and bad examples. However, PUBG and Krafton seem to be doing things on a smaller scale.
For starters, Ground of Honor: Rondo isn’t a feature-length film. Secondly, they’ve gone for an industry-proven director Sam Hargrave to direct it. Originally a stuntman, he’s now the director of the Chris Hemsworth lead Extraction franchise, something many would agree is heavy on the action, less so on the story, something PUBG and the developers would admit is very on point with their intended gaming experience.
Second, the film features Lee Jung Jae and Daniel Wu, two actors who may not be as mainstream as others who could have been picked, but certainly have the acting prowess and physical capabilities to carry the film. Let’s put it this way, if you’ve not watched it yet, you should.
Same PUBG, New Map
Why the short film? Well, PUBG is getting a new map for players to enjoy! So yes, this is one hell of a way to mark that occasion, I’m sure you’d agree. According to PUBG’s official site:
The 8×8 map features the largest playable area ever in the game and is a seamless blend of traditional charm and contemporary visuals across its diverse regions.
To say we’re excited is an understatement. A larger map with a different feel is exactly what is needed to keep things fresh, and PUBG has never been afraid of doing things differently from the very beginning.
As well as a brand new map to explore and play through, Krafton is running the ‘Rondo Royale Celebration’ from December 6th to 20th, with new events, prizes, and more available for players. However, one small caveat to all of this. PC Players can access the map from now on, but console players will need to wait a short while until December 14th before they can get involved. A short wait for sure.
As of writing, the film is available to watch above, having premiered at 1PM. Is this the start of a new trend of gaming films? Or perhaps the start of a new type of marketing for new, massive updates from games? Either way, we are here for it, and with a new map coming to
