Leonardo DiCaprio has exclusively stated that he is a big fan of Japanese anime. His favorite anime series has been Akira, which has impacted his life since he was a teenager. The film became so important for DiCaprio that he even decided to produce a live-action adaptation of the movie, which is still in the works.
Set in a futuristic universe, Akira tells the tale of Shōtarō Kaneda, the leader of a biker gang, whose childhood friend Tetsuo Shima develops extraordinary telekinetic abilities following a motorcycle accident. Tetsuo Shima eventually poses a threat to an entire military complex amid chaos and rebellion in Neo-Tokyo, a sprawling futuristic metropolis.
DiCaprio has previously declared that Princess Mononoke, directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli, is one of his all-time favorite films, aside from Akira. Under the direction of Miyazaki, the movie explores themes of environmental consequences as the Wolf God Moro and the Princess fight against the advancement of civilization.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s Love For Akira
DiCaprio has exclusively admitted his love for Akira. In an interview with MTV, DiCaprio stated how he is a big fan of Japanese anime and how he is ready to produce the movie, and he is just waiting for the final draft of the script. He said:
“We’re waiting for the final draft of the script [for ‘Akira’]. I’m a big fan of Japanese anime — that and another project called ‘Ninja Scroll’ we’re trying to get developed and made into a movie, and I know there are a lot of loyal fans out there of the project and die-hard fans, so we’re going to try to do the best job we possibly can and we’re not going to make the movie until the script is in the right shape.”
He stated that he knows the impact of the fans on the series and its popularity, therefore he wants to do the best job with the scripts, the casting, the production, etc to give the fans the perfect adaptation of the series.
