While Raiders of the Lost Ark became one of the best movies from the Indiana Jones franchise for its unique storyline and Harrison Ford’s spectacular acting, the behind-the-scenes of the movie weren’t exactly as spectacular, as revealed by the 81-year-old legend.

Appearing on CNN for his most recent interview for the last of Indiana Jones movie, Ford recalled the time when everyone on sets of Raiders of the Lost Ark was suffering from dysentery due to the less-than-ideal conditions – all except Steven Spielberg. Revealing the lengths to which the director went to avoid getting contaminated, Ford said,

“We were to have filmed a four-day whip and scimitar fight in a marketplace. And I was suffering from dysentery. And so were many members of the crew. Not Steven, because every time he went in the shower, he put gaffer tape over his mouth, and he traveled with a trunk full of Spaghetti-O’s.”

Even though his precautions were maybe a little bit too weird, however, they did work for Spielberg, judging how he wasn’t willing to mess around on the sets with his health while filming.

Although sick, Harrison Ford didn’t step back from giving his best while shooting the $389M movie. What’s more, is that the legend’s dysentery also ended up leading to a very famous scene in the film – where Indiana Jones whips out his gun in the middle of the bazaar to shoot a confrontational, scimitar-wielding swordsman.

Remembering his ‘adventurous’ experience of still filming Raiders of the Lost Ark despite being struck with a terribly deadly disease, Ford said,

“But he didn’t have dysentery. So it was up to me to say, ‘Listen, I can’t stay out of the dressing room for very long. Should we think about cutting this down? Let’s just shoot this son of a b-tch.’ And Steven said, ‘I was just thinking about that myself!’”

Nevertheless, Harrison Ford’s and Steven Spielberg’s, along with everyone else’s, hard work and splendid contributions to the movie ended up making it nothing less than a masterpiece worth watching.
