It is clear from that post that he frequently displays his pride in his Catholic faith and does not bother if it is not one of the ‘popular’ things to do in Hollywood.

Last week in Oradell, the renowned movie star, Mark Wahlberg gave a speech to the Bergen Catholic football team while taking a break from filming. Before speaking to the team on August 2, the actor, a native of Boston, spent about ten minutes with Bergen Catholic coach, Vito Campanile.

The actor, who is also a co-owner of the Wahlburgers chain, said:

“You guys are so blessed and so fortunate. I know it’s tough out there. There’s a lot of temptation. You’ve got all the opportunity in the world. You got to decide what you’re gonna do with it and what you’re gonna make of it. Build each other up, help each other out. Work hard.”

Vito Campanile, the head coach of Bergen Catholic, made the statement on Tuesday (August 1) at the Super Football Conference Media Day:

“It was an awesome message. I think it’s great that our guys got to hear a message from someone in another genre of life, someone who is successful and hear him talking about his focus on being elite at what he does.”

Campanile, whose team has won the New Jersey state championship the last two seasons, claimed that he met Wahlberg through acquaintances he had made at the University of Massachusetts.

What Were The Reactions of the Fans?

However, some fans have complained to Wahlberg and asked if the actor would offer the same advice to Jewish or other schools. One fan argued:

“He came cause they are catholic. Lets see if he does that at jewish or non-denominational schools. Probably not!”

Though, there were a lot of fans who commended the actor for his initiative:

“Awesome to see this brotherhood between everyone in the room. Armor.”

Another said:

“That’s awesome that you went to Bergen. I graduated from BC a long time ago but it’s a school that builds character and men.”

The actor’s speech appeared to have overly moved one fan, who said:

“God Bless you Mark for speaking to this group of young men!!! I guarantee you’re making a difference!! Your special wonderful mom would be so proud! I so enjoyed meeting her via the TV show. I watch replays.”

One supported the actor’s speech and even offered advice for young boys:

“Yes! Build up boys and young men to be strong, masculine leaders the world needs. No more tearing them down!”

Even though Wahlberg is a devout Catholic, he said in an interview with Today earlier this year that he does not want to “jam it down anybody’s throat.”

“It’s not popular in my industry, but you know, I cannot deny my faith,” he added. “It’s important for me to share that with people. But I have friends from all walks of life and all different types of faiths and religions, so it’s important to respect and honor them as well.”

The actor’s next project is an adventure movie, Arthur the King, which Simon Cellan Jones is directing. The release date has not yet been declared.
