As Lex Luthor is to make his live-action debut in the newly revamped DC universe by James Gunn, to be portrayed by Nicholas Hoult, he is sure to be written after the many DC comic narratives involving the character. However, one plan of his in the comics is so diabolical that Gunn would never even adapt it in David Corenswet’s Superman franchise.

Over the years there have been several entertaining and interesting storylines involving Lex Luthor and Superman. Always wanting to stay ahead of the Man of Steel, Luthor is known to meticulously craft sinister plans that are sure to mess up the life of Superman. And the subject of his wrath against the DC superhero is often his heroine, Lois Lane.

However, Luthor’s wrath towards Lane is not only because he hates the Man of Steel but also because he harbors deep affection for the character. After trying to court her several times in the comics and failing, in Action Comics #890 by Paul Cornell and Pete Woods, titled The Black Ring, Luthor at LexCorp creates a robot version of Lois Lane using her DNA and Kryptonian cybernetics (see YouTube).

The Robot Lois Lane does not only act as his assistant or conscience but she also has several weapons inbuilt her that make her capable of protecting Luthor. However, as problematic as it sounds, his actions are more problematic when one realizes he goes on to have s*x with her.

However, it was her first appearance that sparked a controversy and led to several shocking reactions from fans. While some fans were disturbed, others raised questions regarding the character’s morality.

It’s not just a simple android. It was made using Lois’ DNA and advanced tech…meaning, it might as well be a living clone of Lois…and that’s phucked up. If it was just an android with no living components, different story. –@Gudsur

While fans have had various reactions to this particular storyline, most of them find it problematic and cruel, it is no wonder James Gunn would never adapt it at all. With the DC universe just getting revamped, it would be better for them to steer clear of such a contentious storyline.
Meanwhile, James Gunn’s Superman will be released on July 11, 2025.
