Lily Gladstone is slated to star in a science fiction film, written by Charlie Kaufman. Gladstone wowed audiences with her performance in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, where she essayed the role of Mollie Kyle, a survivor of the Osage Indian Murders. Reed Morano is reportedly helming Gladstone’s science fiction film.
The film is set to be an adaptation of The Memory Police (Hisoyaka na Kesshō, “Secret Crystallization”) penned by acclaimed author Yōko Ogawa, published on 26th January 1994. The film was announced by Amazon Studion in 2020.
The Memory Police is a classic science fiction tale
Martin Scorsese is set to produce the film, reuniting with Lily Gladstone, whom he directed in Killers of the Flower Moon. The film is about an island, where certain characters are responsible for removing memories from its inhabitants. The film follows a novelist who tries to look for his editor, while also remembering stuff that they should not, hiding from the police.
The film is to be directed by Reed Morano, who has had her fair share of experience directing dystopias. Morano has directed a few episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale, adapted from Margaret Atwood’s groundbreaking dystopian novel. Morano has also directed Peter Dinklage and Elle Fanning in the indie post-apocalyptic film I Think We’re Alone Now.
The Memory Police has two separate major influences, modernist writer Franz Kafka and George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, the quintessential dystopian story.
Gladstone’s casting is the perfect spotlight on the project
Gladstone’s casting announcement is the perfect way to put a spotlight on the project. Lily Gladstone has become the first Native American actor to be nominated for an Oscar, for her role in Scorsese’s latest offering. The actress also won a Golden Globe for the same film. Other praises that have been heaped on her are that of Best Actress by The New York Film Critics Circle and the Virtuoso Award that she is set to receive from the Santa Barbara Film Festival.
With all this spotlight on Gladstone, their casting in the film can put the project under the spotlight, allowing it to draw eyeballs that would have otherwise been ignored by the mainstream audience. The announcement comes at the height of the awards season too, when all eyes are trained on the actors who are nominated for various categories, along with the projects that they have on their radar.
