Chaos Walking was initially supposed to be released in 2019 but was finally released in 2021 instead

Doug Liman’s Chaos Walking was initially supposed to be released on March 1, 2019. However, the date came and went by but the movie was not released due to unknown circumstances. Lionsgate Entertainment had announced earlier in the year that the movie starring Tom Holland would be released in 2020. However, that never happened because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Some insights were shared later in a piece in the Wall Street Journal about the delay in the release of the movie. According to sources the movie was not released in March 2019 because it “turned out so poorly it was deemed unreleasable by executives who watched initial cuts last year[in 2018], according to current and former employees.

The movie starring Tom Holland still turned out to be a box office bomb

Jon Feltheimer, the Chief Executive Officer of Lions Gate Entertainment also opened up about the delay in the release of the movie starring Tom Holland and revealed they would be filming a bit more scenes to save the movie. According to Wall Street Journal,

Lionsgate delayed the film’s planned March release and is about to begin three weeks of additional production, at a cost of millions more, in the hope that new scenes will improve its commercial prospects. “We wouldn’t be shooting more if we didn’t think we could make this movie work,” said Mr. Feltheimer.

Even after adding some extra scenes, it seems like the commercial prospects of the movie did not improve as such as the movie turned out to be a box office bomb. The movie only grossed $27 million worldwide against its budget of $125,00 million.

Chaos Walking also received very negative reviews from fans and critics for its lack of character development and uneven pacing throughout the movie among many other things.
