The show debuted on Netflix on 22 February 2024, and fans immediately grasped the visible changes that the showrunners have decided to move on with. Amid several alterations to the source material, Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action took away one crucial essence of Aang.

Aang’s Flight In Live-Action Avatar: The Last Airbender Was Shocking

When Netflix decided to make Aang, played by Gordon Cormier, fly high with his chuckles, it was quite surprising for fans. Following the mythos of the show, Zaheer, who appeared in Nickelodeon’s The Legend of Korra, could fly because he could let go of his earthly attachments, contrary to Aang. So, Aang’s flight in the live-action was surprising for many as the character refused to do the same as Zaheer. One X user who goes by the name, Kev, puts it with elegant justification.

“I really don’t like the idea of Aang flying to illustrate that he’s an airbending prodigy. The whole point of Zaheer flying was that he let go of all earthly attachments – something that Aang refused to do. There’s weight to it that’s thrown out for spectacle.”

Some fans refused to believe his flight justifying the scene as Aang was gliding in the air as air around him could be seen in the scene. However, the style of the flight is similar to Zaheer’s. This particular scene rips away the essence of the mythos of the character.

Albert Kim, the program creator and showrunner of Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action show, addressed the online debate surrounding the show. Since the release of the first trailer of the show, fans have noticed certain immaculate points, and it has created a huge splash online. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Kim revealed that he is happy as fans have kept their interest in the show. “It’s also very nice to have so many people so invested and passionate about the story,” Kim told the outlet.

“I’d much rather have that than be ignored. So being able to be in the forefront of something like that is pretty exciting. It can’t please everyone, and as long as you understand that it’s all fair game, I’m happy that fans are having debates and discussing these topics. I just want to wait for them to do it after seeing the show. And then I’m really excited to see what they talk about and what they like and don’t like.”

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender met with mixed reviews after the premiere. The creator previously promised that they would keep the essence of the show close to the source material, but there was a huge shift and changes. It did not go smoothly as certain fans were not happy with the big alterations.
