Ross and Rachel’s relationship on the hit sitcom FRIENDS was marred with several ups and downs. The duo’s constant breakups and reconciliations kept the fans on the edge of their seats. Among their many splits, one notable moment occurs when Phoebe sets Ross up with her friend, Bonnie. After hearing this, Rachel is initially relieved, recalling Bonnie as bald. But to her dismay, Bonnie now has gorgeous long hair.

This sparked jealousy, and Rachel’s subsequent actions—convincing Bonnie to shave her head again—are often viewed as one of the biggest betrayals on screen. However, a Reddit post has made this infamous scene a lot less cruel and more of a comedic highlight.

Jennifer Aniston‘s Rachel Green was iconic, not just for her fashion sense. From leaving her fiancé Barry at the altar to trying to stop Ross from getting married to Emily, the character was always up to something. But she also had a manipulative side to her that occasionally resurfaced. For instance, in the season three finale, The One at the Beach, she managed to convince Ross’ then-girlfriend Bonnie to shave her head.

Bonnie had complained to Rachel that her hair was getting messy from the ocean. Rachel knowing that Bonnie had previously shaved her head suggested she do it again. While Rachel’s behavior in that scene was problematic on so many levels, a Reddit user highlighted a significant inconsistency with the scene. In his post, he suggested, “Bonnie doesn’t go swimming bald until nighttime, yet her head got sunburned.”

While the scene was certainly questionable, Rachel’s scheme played out exactly as she had hoped, with Ross choosing her in the end. However, her triumph was fleeting. Ross struggled to make sense of her 18-page (front and back) letter and ultimately fell asleep trying.

Christine Taylor’s Audition Experience for Her Role in FRIENDS

Christine Taylor was offered the role of Bonnie in the hit sitcom without even auditioning. Further, given the show’s popularity at the time, she didn’t even think twice before saying yes to her guest appearance. She accepted the role without any script reviews or role details due to her own enthusiasm for being a part of such a high-profile sitcom.

Taylor reflected on her casting experience while making an appearance on Today. She added:

I didn’t even have to audition. (Further) I had already done ‘The Brady Bunch’ and had a little work under my belt. I got the call saying, ‘Hey, do you wanna do an arc on “Friends”? I said, ‘Absolutely, hands down.’ I don’t even need to read it. Just yes, yes, yes, of course. It was going to be great.

Further, the actress didn’t actually get bald to play the role but was using a bald cap, which had its own struggles. In the same interview, Taylor recalled how her hair used to rise inside the bald cap, making her head appear larger than it actually was.

You can stream all the seasons of FRIENDS on Max and rent them on Apple TV.
