One Piece Live-Action star Taz Skylar channeled his inner Sanji to make a bold claim about the sous chef being stronger than Roronoa Zoro. The statement doesn’t only apply to the Netflix series but the manga in general, although Mackenyu gave the co-star a reality check moments later.

The competitive rivalry between Sanji and Zoro has led to many fun sequences in One Piece. They are both fiercely resolute individuals with clashing personalities. While the future best swordsman Roronoa Zoro has a stoic approach to life, Vinsmoke Sanji is somewhere between chivalry and pervertedness.

The live-action focused on the competitiveness of both characters when Taz Skylar’s Sanji and Mackenyu’s Zoro flexed their skills in Episode 8. More such sequences and comical exchanges are to follow and a teaser was given by Skylar himself.

WIRED hosted a special episode in which the main cast of Netflix’s One Piece answered the most searched Google queries for the anime and manga. The team of Taz Skylar, Emily Rudd, Jacob Romero, Iñaki Godoy, and Mackenyu nailed most of the answers, especially about the upcoming addition to the Straw Hat crew, Tony Tony Chopper.

Towards the end, Skylar answered the most controversial question ‘Who is stronger: Sanji or Zoro?’ He tried to avoid a long argument by cheekily replying that Sanji “didn’t need external weapons“, mocking the three-sword style swordsman. Mackenyu countered similarly by telling the viewers to “look at the bounty” to tell the power difference between Zoro and Sanji.

At the beginning of the journey of the Straw Hat Crew toward the Grand Line, only Monkey D. Luffy and Roronoa Zoro had bounties on their head in One Piece. The names of other members were hit-listed several chapters later. In fact, Sanji got his first bounty in Episode 320 while Zoro got a bounty during the Whiskey Peak arc in Episode 65 when he defeated 100 pirates single-handedly.

As per the latest recorded bounties, Roronoa Zoro has a bounty of 1,111,000,000 Berries while Vinsomke Sanji has a bounty of 1,032,000,000 Berries.

Fans generally believe that bounties in the One Pieceverse help in assessing the power levels of the pirates. However, Eiichiro Oda himself confirmed in the manga that weaker pirates have gotten better bounties compared to others due to their notoriety levels. Mackenyu’s subtle dig at Taz Skylar based on Sanji’s bounty doesn’t amount to anything.

For example, Bellamy had a bounty of 55,000,000 Berries in the Mock Town arc but was easily defeated by Luffy who previously had a bounty of 30,000,000 Berries. It must be noted that bounties are levied by the World Government which works closely in tandem with other pirates. They can be bribed to not pursue any action against the most powerful pirates.

Thus, there is no real way to assess the power differences between Sanji and Zoro. One uses his legs to thwart enemies while the other uses Haki-clad swords to cut open the strongest warriors. It can be argued that they are equal in strength as suggested by Oda during the hunting challenge in Little Garden, when both competitive rivals bought equally sized dinosaurs.
