Pixar Animation Studios has dominated the box office for decades with its beloved films, known for their captivating storytelling and visually stunning animations. From Toy Story and Finding Nemo to Coco and Inside Out, Pixar has produced critically acclaimed and commercially successful films time and time again.
Although their new movie, Elemental, is expected to do well at the box office, predictions indicate they will be significantly less successful than usual.
Pixar’s Elemental Tracking Box Office Projections
The opening weekend estimates for Elemental range from $28 million to $38 million, significantly lower than the impressive performance of Pixar’s recent release, Lightyear, which opened with $51 million.
Concerns about Pixar’s future and its ability to compete with other animation powerhouses like Illumination Entertainment and Sony Pictures Animation have been raised in light of this dismal forecast.
Given the studio’s previous successes and audiences’ high expectations for their upcoming films, this prediction is a shock. Peter Sohn, known for his work on The Good Dinosaur, serves as director, and the talented team of John Hoberg, Kat Likkel, Brenda Hsueh, and Sohn themselves, serve as writers.

Elemental appeared to be a surefire hit thanks to its original premise and talented writers. The anticipated earnings at the box office, however, suggest otherwise. Several other highly anticipated movies, including The Flash and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, will all be released around the same time as Elemental. Because of their higher box office projections, people may watch and spend money on these other movies instead of Pixar’s offering.
Based on the popular DC Comics character, the opening weekend take for The Flash is expected to cost between $115 and $140 million. The highly anticipated sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, was initially projected to earn $85 million to $105 million at the box office, while Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is expected to earn $35 million to $45 million.
Pixar’s Bright Prospects for the Future
While Elemental features less well-known names like Leah Lewis, Mamoudou Athie, and Shila Ommi, Pixar has often attracted audiences with compelling characters and star-studded voice casts. Even though talent does not depend entirely on notoriety, the lack of well-known names in the cast could be a problem for the movie’s box office.
In the past, Pixar has used recognizable actors to bring their characters to life, which has increased the films’ overall appeal. The studio has proven, however, that it can successfully launch the careers of new actors and actresses and create compelling characters through their work.
If Elemental doesn’t perform as well as expected at the box office, it could hurt Pixar’s reputation. Competition from other animation giants like Illumination Entertainment and Sony Pictures Animation has heated up recently.
Movies from Illumination Entertainment, like Despicable Me and Minions, have consistently done well at the box office because people of all ages love them. While the failure of a single film need not spell the end for an entire studio, Pixar Animation Studios certainly needed this wake-up call.
