Lucasfilm President Discusses The Future Of Jedi In The Star Wars Franchise

Kathleen Kennedy recently appeared on Entertainment Weekly’s Dagobah Dispatch and discussed the plans they have pertaining to the projects announced during the event:

Well, as we move into the future space, which this story is about 15 years outside of Rise of Skywalker, obviously, we realize that post-war, post-First Order, rise of the new Jedi Order, we left Episode IX with Rey making a commitment to Luke Skywalker that she would rebuild the Jedi Order and so here we are.”

She reiterated the television series projects have been their main priority, although they are also discussing which Star Wars storylines are suited for the big screen:

There are so many things we can do in streaming now where we do massive effects, we really increase the scale and size of these stories, and I certainly find myself personally looking at well, what is that distinction that movies something on to the big screen versus the smaller screen.”

Later on, she added the determining factor that makes a story find its best channel:

It’s usually the intimacy of the character-driven stories that you try to really push in the television space and then spectacle that you can preserve in the movie space.”

Kennedy also expounded on the concept behind James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi, which presumably will serve as a prequel:

We’ve been talking a lot about going well into the past and one of the things that’s really knitting this all together, obviously, are the Jedi. What happened with the Jedi overtime, much like history? How did the Jedi evolve?

The Lucasfilm president added that this upcoming project will encourage the audience to postulate their own theories since Order 66 had them all wiped out, and yet, they keep on coming back. This raises the question, which Kennedy echoed: “Does the galaxy need them anymore?

Lucasfilm also announced in a press release that they are developing a new movie starring Daisy Ridley, where she will reprise her role as Rey. The plot will reportedly focus on “rebuilding the New Jedi Order and the powers that rise to tear it down.” Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is currently attached to the project as director.

At the moment, the studio has not posted any official release dates for the projects mentioned above. It seemingly brings a lot of doubts for fans as Lucasfilm has a habit of announcing movie plans, and somehow, they always end up in the drafts.

All Star Wars movies are streaming on Disney+.
