One Piece is a gem of a show and Monkey D. Luffy is an iconic character. Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, used his magic hands to make such appealing characters that the fans have been loving for more than 20 years. The highest-selling manga of all time, with more than 500 million copies sold, and even now it shows no sign of stopping. Recently, One Piece Live Action also gained popularity for its amazing cast and presentation.
Monkey D. Luffy, the protagonist of One Piece, is the caption of the Strawhat Pirates. His crew is made up of several people who are loyal to him. But among them, there is only one whose loyalty knows no bounds and would not betray his captain under any circumstance. This person is none other than Roronoa Zoro.
Rononoa Zoro Is The Most Loyal Crewmate of Monkey D. Luffy
Roronoa Zoro is the vice-captain of the Strawhat Pirates. His second in second-in-command role has rarely been used in the anime. But out of all the Strawhats, he is the most loyal member. Roronoa Zoro was the first mate of Luffy, whom he rescued from the Marines. They instantly hit it off and started on a journey to achieve their dream.
While Luffy wants to be the King of the Pirates, Zoro wants to be the strongest swordsman in the world. People knew that Zoro was loyal but he earned everyone’s respect in the Thriller Bark arc. After the battle with Gecko Moria, every member of the Strawhat was tired from fatigue. It was at that moment that Bartholomew Kuma, one of the Warlords, arrived to take Luffy’s head. But Zoro insisted that he took his head instead of his captain.
Roronoa Zoro was ready to abandon his dream. Kuma promised to show Zoro hell. He took all the fatigue from Luffy’s body and put it inside Zoro. The sufferings that he went through that day, will be etched in anime history. Sanji later went to find Zoro, only to find him standing in a pool of his own blood.
Zoro survived due to his determination and absolute guts. He was ready to lay down his life for his captain. None of the crewmembers had ever gone through such hell. While Zoro is helping Luffy to reach his goal, Luffy is also very respective of Zoro’s dream. He said that the King of the Pirates will always need the best swordsman in his crew.
Monkey D. Luffy Was Betrayed By Other Strawhats
While Zoro is the synonym for loyalty, there are other Strawhat members, who under pressure, hurt Luffy. Nami was a member of the Arlong Pirates before she joined Luffy. In the beginning, after the Baratie arc, Nami betrays the Strawhats, takes all of their treasure, and goes to Arlong. Even though she was under a pact and forced to do it, a betrayal is a betrayal.
The same goes for Usopp. Usopp’s childhood friend, Kaya, gifted the Going Merry to the Strawhats. After Going Merry died, Usopp blamed Luffy and did not support the idea of going for a new ship. He left the crew and challenged Luffy to a duel. Both parties were at their limits, but Luffy landed the last blow and won the duel.
While everyone wanted to bring back Usopp against Luffy’s wish, it was Zoro who stood up against the notion and said that he disrespected the Captain. If anyone apologizes, it should be Usopp. A pirate crew cannot go very long if the members make decisions against the captain.
Another incident of the Strawhat Captain facing betrayal was during the Whole Cake Island when Sanji left the crew. Sanji was forced to go back to his father, Vinsmoke Judge, and marry Pudding, the daughter of Big Mom. It was supposed to be an alliance between the two families. In that process, Sanji beats up his captain badly, so that he will leave him alone.
Sanji was deeply hurt as he had to beat one of his best friends. But later he cooked for him and fed him. All these incidents were done under some influence but still fall under betrayal. On the other hand, Roronoa Zoro always puts his captain ahead of his dreams. The bond between a captain and his vice-captain is always special.
