Monkey D. Luffy’s Gear 5 powers were witnessed in his battle against Kaido in One Piece Chapter 1044 in the manga, animated in Episode 1071 of the franchise. Characteristic of the cavalier Eiichiro Oda, he broke the conventional norm of shonen transformations by assigning the absurd to his protagonist.
Manga readers were left bewildered by the animation of Luffy versus Kaido. Each hit in his Gear 5 form was accompanied by ‘Looney Toonish’ sound effects, making it difficult to seriously perceive the battle between the reincarnation of God Nika against the tyrannic ruler of Wano Country. The One Piece mangaka even termed Gear 5’s supreme ability as ‘Toon Power.’
Oda’s inventive approach to shonen power-ups is a stride towards the unexplored terrain of ‘comical’ abilities that break the fourth wall. The writer already dived headlong into the absurdity of Luffy’s powers with the previous Gear forms but the fifth version is the icing on the cake.

Gear 5 In One Piece Is The Most Innovative Yet Absurd Power
Gear 5 Monkey D. Luffy channels his three Haki powers to become a god-like being. He could use both Conqueror Haki and Armament Haki in devastating attacks like the Bajrang Gun while also being able to tap into his Gear 3 giant form to maximize his impacts. The advanced form of Observation Haki grants him heightened perception and speed.
Stated to be “the most ridiculous power in the world” of One Piece, the awakening of the Gomu Gomu No Mi Devil Fruit also allows Monkey D. Luffy to bend reality to his will with his ‘rubbery’ powers. He could make anything he touched into rubber. Such altering power stopped Kaido’s Bolo Breath while also changing the form of natural creations such as lightning.
Described as the Warrior of Liberation, the true extent of Luffy’s hasn’t been fully fleshed out by the manga. Eiichiro Oda has yet to state the range of ‘Toon Force’ and whether it applies to any man or object without fail. If that is the case, the newly inducted Warlord of the Sea might be the most powerful individual in One Piece, surpassing the powers of the Five Elders.
The cartoonish Gear 5 of Luffy is considered to make the Straw Hat immune to any ability because of its elasticity. Fans criticized the transformation for its silliness, the constant ‘Boom’ and ‘Splat’ words in the anime making the fight seem childish, but it was yet another technique from which Oda undermined the Monkey’s powers to prepare him for a more impactful finale.

Monkey D. Luffy’s Gear 5 Is A True Successor Of Other Gear Forms
In One Piece, Luffy’s transformations are accompanied by situational irony and his fights are punctuated with comedic scenes. The Enies Lobby arc showcased the Straw Hat tapping into Gear 2 during his fight with Blueno. He released steam from his body by pumping more blood into his organs, which took a toll on his body, but massively boosted his strength, speed, and perception.
Gear 3’s revelation was the opposite of Gear 2’s steaming-hot ‘serious’ mode. Monkey D. Luffy became a ‘chibi’ figure after making any part of his body extend and expand during his fight with Rob Lucci. Such a mixture of ridiculous Gomu Gomu No Mi power with equally ridiculous outcomes led to the organic development of Luffy’s Gear 5 form.
Gear 5 also has the same disadvantage as the previous Gears – excessive burnout. Luffy ages massively due to his supposed final form but it must be noted that the limitation is just from a storytelling angle and not from Oda’s creative imagination. We have barely tapped into the vastness of Gear 5’s power, given the circulating theories of the reincarnation of Nika being immortal.
As the story progresses toward the final arc and the Five Elders pose a threat to Luffy’s ambition to become the King of the Pirates, fans may get to witness new Gear 5 techniques stemming from Eiichiro Oda’s unconventional creative mind.
