WWE fans are not ones to remain silent when they believe their intelligence is being mocked. And that is exactly what happened when Cody Rhodes boldly claimed to have defeated Roman Reigns and The Shield for the first time ever.
The WWE SmackDown show on March 22 concluded with Roman Reigns making an appearance in the ring. There, he claimed that Rhodes was unintelligent, unwise, and unfit to represent the company as its face. He brought up his alliance with Seth Rollins and mentioned that the latter had stabbed him in the back. In response, Rhodes recalled how he and his brother had defeated Reigns and Rollins back when they were still members of The Shield.
To argue that Rhodes had the ability to defeat him as well as his formidable team of Shield members is not only ludicrous, it’s downright disrespectful to the intelligence of the fans.
Cody Rhodes Mocked Roman Reigns On WWE Smackdown
On the WWE SmackDown episode airing on March 22, Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns decided to square off in person (via Wrestle Zone). Both men made the decision to go to the game by themselves. The conversation was initiated by Reigns telling Rhodes that he was stupid.
In a reverse move, Rhodes asked Roman if he could truly trust The Rock, speculating out loud about who was more powerful in the Bloodline hierarchy—the Final Boss or the Tribal Chief. To Rhodes’ dismay, Reigns responded that Rhodes “is number two” and that all he had to offer the fans was empty talk that would never materialize.
Declaring respectfully that “this is the greatest number two of all time”, Cody Rhodes should never settle for anything less than the top spot since Roman Reigns would always be “number one”. Rhodes shot back, saying he was “the one” when it came to WrestleMania. He said,
“You guys as a matter of fact, were undefeated, let me ask you something, ‘do you remember the first team that did beat The Shield, let me give you a hint..the last name was Rhodes.”
Roman reached out to shake hands with Reigns, but he refused, and he left the ring unscathed. However, as he was going out, he snapped his fingers.
Fan Fury: WWE Supporters Challenge Cody Rhodes’ Win Claim Against Roman Reigns
According to The Sportster’s report, The Shield suffered their first-ever defeat in WWE history on June 14, 2013, when they were defeated by Daniel Bryan, Kane, and Randy Orton. Before the loss, which followed feuds with Team Hell No and Orton, The Shield—which consists of Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, and Dean Ambrose—had been unbeaten for months.
Also, Rhodes and his brother Goldust won the Tag Team Championship on October 14th, Raw, via a No Disqualification victory over The Shield.
The audacity of Rhodes in making such a statement is truly mind-blowing. It is no secret that Reigns is one of WWE’s most dominant and talented wrestlers today. To suggest that Rhodes was able to defeat him and his formidable Shield team is not only ridiculous but also insulting to the fans’ intelligence. Let’s hear some of the fans’ comments via X:
Cody Rhodes just lied on his promo tonight. Rhodes weren’t the first to beat the Shield.
It was Randy Orton and Tema Hell No. Lying like a politician.#Smackdown pic.twitter.com/KkQWnJnlB2

The Shield’s first tag team loss was to Cody and Stardust, that’s what he’s referring to. Team Hell No and Orton were the first to beat The Shield in a 6-man tag match

But Cody and Gold dust were the first team to beat the shield when they were tag team champions which was Roman and Seth

Claims and boasts are common in the professional wrestling world. So, whether or not Rhodes truly defeated Roman Reigns and The Shield for the first time, one thing is for sure: he has fans talking and buzzing with anticipation. And, ultimately, isn’t that what wrestling is about?
Additionally, WrestleMania XL is an upcoming professional wrestling event that WWE is set to produce in 2024. The 40th edition of WrestleMania will take place over two nights on April 6 and 7, 2024, at Pennsylvania’s Lincoln Financial Field.
