Marvel has hit a new low with the immensely underwhelming performance of Madame Web. The film was ranked lower than Morbius in both ticket sales and critical acclaim. Forgettable characters and lack of action were topped off with subpar performances from the actors making for quite a disaster. A good plot could have helped, but the Dakota Johnson feature lacked that as well. As an extension of the Spider-Man films, Madame Web was a highly anticipated movie.

But it left many disappointed. Moreover, it revealed an arc from the history of Peter Parker’s life- a history that some fans had a hard time stomaching. The film broke a little too many hearts of Marvel fans across the globe—something one wouldn’t expect from a Valentine’s Day release.

Madame Web Disappointed Marvel Fans With A Spider-Man Trivia

Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney’s Madame Web is Sony’s first superhero movie of 2024. It can’t be said that Sony is off to a good start, but the film is certainly something. Set in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, the film is heavily interwoven with references to Peter Parker and his family while also bringing back some forgotten lore of the superhero. However, this trip of nostalgia hasn’t necessarily been nice.

As the film opens, viewers see Cassandra Webb’s (played by Dakota Johnson) life as a New York City paramedic. She works with a young Ben Parker who reveals he is dating someone new but refuses to share her name.

At this, Cassandra Webb remarks that the relationship must be new. This is an obvious nod to Aunt May. This also reveals that Aunt May married into the Parker family and isn’t related to Peter Parker by blood. While this is not an unknown fact, it seems some fans didn’t like this refresher of memories.

The film presents a different version of Madame Web from the comics. And it seems that the screenwriters have gone overboard with trying to relate it to Spider-Man. This is the consensus among fans.

As pointed out by the famous scooper of everything film and TV, MyTimeToShineHello (@MyTimeToShineH) on X, fans are not impressed with the information. Cassandra Webb’s words may very well be a jab at the bombardment of Spider-Man references. And how unnecessary they are to the film.

Here is what some others had to say:

The comments are also filled with fans agreeing and pointing out that Peter Parker not being a blood relative of Aunt May is well-elaborated in the comics. However, it does not make that much of a difference in the grand scheme of things. The bond Aunt May and Peter Parker share is extremely special as is.

Madame Web is now available in theaters near and far.
