Mamoru Oshii, a prominent figure in the anime industry, has been vocal about his opinions on what he thinks of the types of anime that have been coming out in recent times. He has freely expressed how anime today is specially curated to be commercial in order to gain more profits, and that is done by portraying violence and NSFW content in the series to please the fans.

What Mamoru Oshii Thinks Of Commercial Anime Such As Neon Genesis Evangelion
In an interview with CINRA earlier this year, Oshii revealed his thoughts and opinions on matters such as how anime in modern times is majorly being made just for the sole purpose of gathering profits and nothing else.
Mamoru Oshii even talked about how what makes commercial anime different from artistic anime is the fact that artistic anime will forever remain eternal and will be remembered by people, something commercial anime will fail to do.
Giving the example for the above-said statement, Oshii brings up famous mecha genre titles, such as Neon Genesis Evangelion, which were created with the only purpose of gathering profit, and thus will fail to become timeless.

He revealed a key difference between the two which is that artistic anime, he believes, originated from Europe instead and was made by Individuals instead of large corporations.
The above-stated fact is also the reason why the famous director believes that artistic anime is more appreciated in the continent of Europe than in the rest of the world. He also firmly believes that artistic anime can never ever be used for commercial purposes, coming back to the point that it has a very specific genre of audience and watchers.
