The Joker, released in 2019 was a significant film in Joaquin Phoenix’s career. The DC movie gave the Gladiator actor his first Oscar win for Best Actor and welcomed worldwide praise. When the sequel Joker: Folie à Deux was announced to cast Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, the audience expected another banger of a performance.

Now the casting director of the film, Francine Maisler has also hyped up Lady Gaga’s performance as the Arkham Asylum therapist Harleen Quinzel aka Harley Quinn.

After Warner Bros. Pictures dropped the teaser of Joker: Folie à Deux, the fans were impressed by the glimpses and even predicted another Oscar success for Joaquin Phoenix. However, the casting director thinks that the actor would not be able to overshadow Lady Gaga.

The hauntingly beautiful teaser of Joker: Folie à Deux confirmed that Arthur Fleck will not be alone in the sequel. Joaquin Phoenix‘s character will be accompanied by another character sharing the same musical delusion and insanity. As the fans were doubtful about Lady Gaga‘s take on the role, previously helmed by Margot Robbie, Francine Maisler assured that the fans would be surprised.

The casting director Francine Maisler had the privilege of watching an early cut of Joker 2. Maisler looked extremely impressed by Gaga’s character when she and her associate Molly Rose talked about the Todd Phillips movie at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic.

As reported by Deadline, Maisler made it clear that casting Lady Gaga was not her decision but Todd Phillips’. She claimed that she was awed by the performance. Francine Maisler added that “we all knew what she could do in A Star is Born” but that was also close to her real-life persona. However, Maisler thinks Gaga is a different beast altogether in Joker 2.

I mean, we all knew what she could do in A Star is Born, but I thought, ‘Oh, well, that’s kind of in her wheelhouse.’ Something she could do and just be real. But this… Man, she’s good. Joaquin blows your mind, but that she could keep up with him, and be real — and not just wiped off the screen by what that role is and what the performance is — shows she’s good.

Previously, we have seen many cases where films fail to ride on the hype and fall hard. Still the fans may believe in Francine Maisler as the DC Elseworlds project is a sequel to one of the most critically and commercially appreciated R-rated comic book movies. It will be exciting to see if the House of Gucci actress can steal the spotlight from the Oscar-winner in his own project.

Margot Robbie also believes in Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn

It cannot be denied that despite its failure, the DCEU gave us some interesting castings. While we can never talk enough about the missed opportunity with Henry Cavill’s Superman, Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn has also been a much-appreciated character.

We are yet to know if Robbie will reprise her DC role in James Gunn’s new DCU, but she has already shown her excitement to watch Lady Gaga’s take on the role. Earlier Gaga stated that her take would be very different and very authentic to this movie and these characters” (via Access Hollywood).

Soon Margot Robbie also took to an interview with Variety to show her excitement for DC Elseworlds’ Harley Quinn. The Barbie fame was hopeful that Lady Gaga is “going to crush it”. With Joker: Folie à Deux being made as a musical psychological thriller, the fans are excited to see how the tonal change goes with a character like the Clown Prince of Crime.

Joker: Folie à Deux will be released on October 4, 2024.
