Butcher’s Creek Is a New Horror Game Reminiscent of Manhunt and Condemned

Manhunt is probably known as one of the most controversial titles of all time. And fans of this horror title may be excited to learn that a new slasher game has been announced which draws inspiration directly from it.

The newly announced Butcher’s Creek is a first-person horror game which cites the Manhunt series and 2005’s Condemned: Criminal Origins as titles which have strongly influenced the source material.

For people who haven’t experienced either Manhunt or Condemned, these titles pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable in video games and Manhunt was maybe unsurprisingly banned in some countries. Although it has been nearly two decades since the first Condemned title was launched, it is still regarded as one of the greatest horror games of the Xbox 260 generation.

What do we know about the Manhunt inspired game Butcher’s Creek?

Who played the controversial game Manhunt?

The game is described as a ‘terrifying slasher’ and comes from the twisted mind of Dusk author and Gloomwood co-creator, David Szymanski. However unlike his previous works, this time round Szymanksi is self-publishing the title with a release date of some time in 2024.

Butcher’s Creek is confirmed to be set in Autumn 1993 and centres around a horror fanatic who visits an abandoned cabin near Butcher’s Creek, Pennsylvania. This is where the main character investigates rumours that ‘authentic’ snuff movies have been filmed. The protagonist is then captured by a gang of sadists who lay in wait and has to implement some horrific methods of his own to escape with his life. A ‘rich arsenal’ of weapons are available to players; wire cutters, pipes, axes, hammers and many more tools will have to be utilised in order to survive.

Whilst there is still to be a trailer released for this game, several gameplay features have been listed on the Steam page. These include the ability to photograph horrific murder scenes, which interestingly restores health and could allude to some ‘hidden’ desires of the character. There is also the ability to explore ‘decaying farmhouses, collapsing factories, and seedy strip clubs’ located throughout the Appalachian Forest and experience what has been described as ‘a unique aesthetic combining the gritty shot-on-video look of found footage’.

Early thoughts of some fans have been that the game shows loads of potential and given that we haven’t seen any follow ups to the Manhunter and Condemned series, could this game be the one to step up and fill and that gap?

And whilst there is still a while to wait before the game drops, horror fans can go back and check out the source material on modern day platforms. Manhunt is available to play in an HD format on PS4, whilst still being backward compatible on Xbox. And Condemned: Criminal Origins is again backward compatible on Xbox and available to play through Steam.
