Margot Robbie Addresses the Possibility of a Barbie Sequel

Ever since Barbie defied all expectations by grossing $1.442 billion at the global box office, fans have been eager for an update regarding a sequel. It is only fair that the biggest commercial juggernaut of 2023 is expanded into a franchise. When Margot Robbie, the star and producer of Barbie attended the 81st Golden Globe Awards held on January 7, 2024, she was once again faced with addressing a possible sequel.

During a brief chat with Variety on the Golden Globes red carpet, the correspondent expressed excitement to see the sequel, which Robbie has previously denied being in the works. In response, Robbie did not offer a direct confirmation or denial but playfully left the door open for a sequel.

“You can prove me wrong. We’ll see.”

Robbie made the above comment, giving a brief response to the indirect question about the Barbie sequel. In the past, director Greta Gerwig and Robbie have both insisted that there are no immediate plans for a second installment. However, neither has ruled out the possibility entirely.

“We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something. Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”

Robbie made the statement during an interview with the Associated Press in November last year. Similarly, Robbie’s co-star, Ryan Gosling, also denied knowledge of plans for a sequel but remained open to the possibility. As a result, despite the enthusiasm from fans to return to Barbieland, there are no immediate plans for a sequel.
