Margot Robbie took the cinema world by storm with 2023’s Barbie, which emerged as the year’s highest-grossing film. It also received critical acclaim and several accolades, including nine nominations at the 81st Golden Globe Awards. Robbie was in attendance at the award ceremony, where she was quizzed about the possibility of a sequel to Barbie.
While Robbie played coy about future plans to expand the film into a franchise, Barbie ended the night on a disappointing note as it faced humiliating losses in most categories it was nominated in. If you are wondering what Robbie said about the possibility of a Barbie sequel and whether the actress-producer confirmed plans for a second installment, here is everything you need to know.
Margot Robbie Addresses the Possibility of a Barbie Sequel
Ever since Barbie defied all expectations by grossing $1.442 billion at the global box office, fans have been eager for an update regarding a sequel. It is only fair that the biggest commercial juggernaut of 2023 is expanded into a franchise. When Margot Robbie, the star and producer of Barbie attended the 81st Golden Globe Awards held on January 7, 2024, she was once again faced with addressing a possible sequel.
During a brief chat with Variety on the Golden Globes red carpet, the correspondent expressed excitement to see the sequel, which Robbie has previously denied being in the works. In response, Robbie did not offer a direct confirmation or denial but playfully left the door open for a sequel.
“You can prove me wrong. We’ll see.”
Robbie made the above comment, giving a brief response to the indirect question about the Barbie sequel. In the past, director Greta Gerwig and Robbie have both insisted that there are no immediate plans for a second installment. However, neither has ruled out the possibility entirely.
“We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something. Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”
Robbie made the statement during an interview with the Associated Press in November last year. Similarly, Robbie’s co-star, Ryan Gosling, also denied knowledge of plans for a sequel but remained open to the possibility. As a result, despite the enthusiasm from fans to return to Barbieland, there are no immediate plans for a sequel.
Barbie Was Swept Aside at the 81st Golden Globe Awards
Despite coming into the awards season as a critics’ darling, Barbie ended up with a disappointing string of results at the 81st Golden Globe Awards. Barbie started the evening at the top of the pile, with the highest number of nominations for a single film this year. However, the film only managed to take home two awards – Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Original Song.

Furthermore, Barbie faced a humiliating loss in the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category losing out to Poor Things. Robbie also lost to Poor Things star Emma Stone for the Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Meanwhile, Oppenheimer, which opened in direct competition with Barbie last year, took home the most awards. The Christopher Nolan directorial went on to win five out of eight nominations, completely sweeping aside Barbie.
