Margot Robbie’s Barbie Might Influence Black Mirror’s USS Callister’s Sequel Episode

USS Callister of Black Mirror Season Four is ranked one of the best episodes of the entire series. The episode has Robert Daly, played by Jesse Plemons, at its center.

Daly is a discontented employee at a prominent tech company, who doesn’t have the best relationship with his co-workers. To vent his frustrations, he creates sentient digital clones of said co-workers and traps them in a Star Trek-like game. This gives him the illusion of authority and control which his daily life lacks.

Another prominent character in the episode is played by Cristin Milioti. The character Milioti plays is one of the digital avatars Daly has created. She realizes what an absolute mess of a situation she is in and decides to lead a revolt against Daly.

In the 2017-released episode, Milioti’s character becomes aware of her own lack of genitals, as happens in Margot Robbie’s Barbie. The show writers might get inspired by the Greta Gerwig-written plot for the sequel.

The episode also featured Jimmi Simpson, Michaela Coel, Billy Magnussen, Milanka Brooks, and Osy Ikhile. Additionally, it also has cameos from Plemons real-life wife Kirsten Dunst and Aaron Paul.

On Thursday, Netflix announced that Black Mirror will return with a 6-episode series in 2025. The show will include a direct sequel for USS Callister. Netflix has given the premise only for the sequel episode. It reads (via Entertainment Weekly):

“Robert Daly is dead, but for the crew of the USS Callister, their problems are just beginning.”

This means that Milioti’s character along with her crew members navigate their way in the new strange territory in a captainless ship.

It should be noted that this is the first time in the history of Black Mirror that an episode is getting a direct follow-up. It is unprecedented but given the brilliant storyline of USS Callister, it is not surprising that the episode be continued into the newer season.

All seasons of Black Mirror are available on Netflix.
