Every year around December, Mariah Carey‘s Christmas hit All I Want for Christmas Is You re-emerges and becomes popular owing to the festive season and atmosphere. The song managed to climb the Billboard charts every year and Carey earned a significant amount of revenue from her song’s resurgence at the end of 2021.

According to Billboard, through streaming and publishing the song, Carey and Sony earned an estimated $1.36 million in 2021. However, these numbers are just for the US. Globally, the song earned a whopping 6.16 million (including revenue and publishing). She earned $1.55 million from the $4.5 million revenue from the master recording version of the song.

However, as Billboard went deep into the nitty-gritty of her earnings, it seems she made less than this estimated figure. As she wrote the song with Walter Afanasieff, they are supposed to have an equal share of the song. This means Carey would get $830,000. If one considers a 10% administration fee, her earnings come around $747,000.

A 75-25% co-publishing deal would also mean that Carey’s earnings come to f$622,000 which is far off from the estimated figure. If she does not own the publishing rights to the song, she would earn only  $415,000. In all these possible situations provided by Billboard, she ends up earning less than $1 million.

Carey told Parade that she took some time to get the song recorded. While she did not give a specific time frame, she revealed that it was one of the quickest songs that she wrote. She said,

“I started writing that on a little DX7 or Casio keyboard that was in this little room in the house that I lived in at the time in Upstate New York lifetimes ago. Just writing down everything that I thought about.

We did take some time doing the record, because if you listen to all those background vocals and all that stuff, you can’t do it in five minutes. So, no, it wasn’t five minutes to get the whole record done. But it was quick considering I’ve taken longer on songs.”

Carey continues to receive all the love from fans every year and sees people celebrating Christmas with her song. The song proved to be her ultimate gift to people around the world.
