When people mention the name of Mark Ruffalo, the image of Hulk immediately comes to mind, and this is the reason why the actor wanted to do Poor Things. He admitted feeling scared the moment he read for the script due to self-doubt, but the end result was absolutely worth the risk he took for his career.
Now, Ruffalo has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 96th Academy Awards, and such a prestigious honor only proves he is every inch deserving of that Oscar statuette.
Mark Ruffalo’s Iconic Scene From Poor Things Was Improvised
Mark Ruffalo admitted in his interview with Entertainment Weekly that he was hesitant to take on the role of Duncan Wedderburn in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things. Just like any other movie project, he gets the same anxiety.
“I thought the script was amazing, but also, it really scared me. I was like, ‘Are you sure this is the part you want me to read for?’ I read it and I was like, ‘I don’t know if I could pull this off.’ ”
Ruffalo’s filmography ranges from action to drama, and even though he has a couple of comedies under his belt, they weren’t really huge franchises.
“I haven’t done a lot of comedy, but we had this rehearsal, and we got to really play and goof off; I found a lot of stuff in there.”
Despite all that, the actor managed to pull off his role; not only that, he was even great at making improvisations. A good performer must always know how to save a scene, and that’s exactly what Ruffalo was praised for by fans.
In a Twitter post, a fan pointed out how good this scene was from Poor Things. The Avengers actor notably uses a terrible fake British accent, and many fans thought his improv perfectly suited his character’s personality as well. Check out the video clip below:

Many fans were happy that the director decided to keep this scene in the final cut, which only adds to Ruffalo’s credibility as an actor. If his improvisations are that good, then there’s no reason he should not take home the Oscar award. Surely, he’s a fine contender against his fellow Marvel star, Robert Downey Jr.
Robert Downey Jr. Is A Top Contender For Oscars’ Best Supporting Actor
On the much-awaited Academy Awards night, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. will square off for the Best Supporting Actor category. The latter was nominated for his work on Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer as Lewis Strauss.
The Iron Man actor has proven to be a top favorite among Oscar voters with an almost unanimous decision as per Variety. Still, these are only a fraction of the total votes and there are other actors vying for the coveted award.
The MCU science bros will also be challenged by Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction), Robert De Niro (Killers of the Flower Moon), and Ryan Gosling (Barbie) for the said category.
Poor Things is now available to stream via Hulu.
