Mark Wahlberg’s box office hit failed to meet audience expectations

The fate of movies at the box office is very unpredictable; sometimes they may do wonders, and sometimes they may witness a drastic fall. Whatever the situation, the people involved in the film should always be ready for it. Actor Mark Wahlberg has been a part of many high-budget films throughout his career, and one of them was The Planet of the Apes movie, which saw financial success at the box office but failed to get positive reviews from critics. The 2001 film was a remake of the original 1968 film of the same name, which was based on Pierre Boulle’s novel.

One of the reasons why the film failed to impress the audience was because it couldn’t do justice to the original film. The 1968 Planet of the Apes film, directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, is a classic science fiction film. In comparison to the OG film, the remake featuring Walberg was nowhere near. Many critics claimed that the remake fell short of depicting the depth and social commentary that was aesthetically demonstrated in the original, which made it so impactful.

During an interview, Wahlberg reflected on the possibilities of why the film failed to meet the audience’s expectations. The actor said that one of the biggest reasons behind the film’s failure was that while filming the movie, the makers rushed to complete the movie. The actor said,

“They didn’t have the script right. They had a release date before he had shot a foot of film. They were pushing him and pushing him in the wrong direction. You have got to let Tim do his thing.”

While the film was primarily surrounded by negative reviews, certain aspects were appreciated by the critics. The film’s visual effects and makeup were praised for their creativity and technical execution. However, it also became a drawback for the film, as some thought that the film heavily relied on this.

However, when the film failed to meet those expectations, Wahlberg blamed himself for it. The actor was highly disappointed by the fate of the film. During an interview, when the actor was asked if he had seen Rise of the Planet of the Apes yet, he said,

“I haven’t seen it yet, but I heard it was pretty damn good. Well, ours wasn’t. It is what it is. Ours wasn’t.”
