Marvel Studios is known to go to great lengths to keep the details of an upcoming project under wraps. While fans continue to discuss an upcoming project, particularly regarding an imminent release such as Avengers: Secret Wars, it also keeps them anticipating what surprising element it would have. Additionally, many MCU stars have also shared that they are only given their part of the script in order to prevent any possible spoilers.
The studio followed the same practice with the 2018 film Avengers: Infinity War, as MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios revealed that only Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans knew the movie’s whole plot.
Marvel Entrusted Full Infinity War Plot to Only Two MCU Stars
Released in 2018, Avengers: Infinity War is considered to be one of the best of the MCU. The movie features the superheroes in an effort to stop Thanos from getting his hands on all the Infinity War. By the end of the movie, many, including some of the superheroes, fall victim to his deadly snap.
However, the Marvel stars have revealed that they did not know about getting blipped until the day they filmed the scenes. Elizabeth Olsen, who portrayed Scarlet Witch in the MCU, shared during an interview, “I didn’t know I got blipped away until we shot it. That was told to us that day.”
She also shared that she did not know about “what happens with Robert [Downey Jr.]’s whole part of the film.” While the studio does not reveal the plot to all the actors, including the movie’s antagonist portrayed by Josh Brolin, there were some exceptions, Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans.
Dave Gonzales, Gavin Edwards, and Joanna Robinson’s book, MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, revealed that while the rest of the cast did not know about the plot, the Iron Man and Captain America actors were the only ones who knew how the events of Infinity War would fold out.
Marvel Stars Claiming They Read the Whole Script
While the book has revealed that no other actor except Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans knew the whole plot, Benedict Cumberbatch has also claimed to have read the entire script of Infinity War. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said, “I’m not supposed to have read the script. But I have. It’s just mind-blowingly epic.”
Chris Evans also talked about reading the script and taking one copy home during an interview. “They let me read it, but you gotta get fussy,” he said before adding, “You’re not supposed to, but I took one home.”
However, filmmakers Joe Russo and Anthony Russo have claimed otherwise. During a conversation with Rotten Tomatoes, the directing duo said, “I mean, RDJ was probably the only one to actually read the entire script. I think Benedict got the script that was included his scenes only.”
They also said that Chris Hemsworth did not know what was happening with Captain America for most of the movie. “So, Hemsworth reads his scenes, and Evans reads his scenes.” However, the book seems to have clarified which actor was actually aware of the broader narrative of the 2018 film.
