Remember when the multiverse was a fun little thing that opened infinite possibilities and not just a million rules and timelines? Well, Marvel seems to be not done with the concept still as an industry insider reported that the upcoming Spider-Man 4 starring Tom Holland would be a multiversal story.

While the previous Holland film Spider-Man: No Way Home too dealt with the multiverse, it had gratuitous cameos from previous iterations such as Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. However, fans seem to be tired of the trope after watching it in films like Ant-Man 3 and Deadpool & Wolverine and are expecting a more street-level story like the Sam Raimi films.

Hollywood and beating a dead horse are a match made in heaven. After multiple misfires, Marvel seemed to have bounced back with the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman-starrer Deadpool & Wolverine. Crossing over a billion dollars, the film dealt with Deadpool going across the multiverse to save his own timeline from crumbling.

However, the film itself, in its usual tongue-in-cheek humor, addressed Marvel’s obsession with the multiverse, with Deadpool asking them to stop with the misses and just move on. The intervention seems to have misfired as a recent report suggested that the upcoming Tom Holland starrer Spider-Man 4 would be a multiverse story.

Industry insider Daniel RPK, who is known for his mostly accurate scoops, revealed new information about the upcoming fourth film (via Spider-Man Newz).

Spider-Man 4 will now begin filming next year and is slated to release in 2026. It’s likely the story for Spider-Man 4 will be multiverse-based.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man seemed to have a perfect arc with No Way Home as the world forgot about his existence and he could finally take on the mantel of the web crawler in obscurity as always. However, another multiverse story could possibly taint that legacy.

Fans Want Sam Raimi-esque Street-Level Stories For Spider-Man 4

While Spider-Man in the comics has fought different levels of threats and has even joined the Avengers, most of his adventures take place in New York and feature him protecting his home city. However, the MCU’s Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland has only been seen in huge adventures like collaborating with the Avengers, Doctor Strange, and S.H.I.E.L.D.

Unlike Sam Raimi’s or even Marc Webb’s stories, Holland has only dealt with mega-level threats such as Thanos, Mysterio, and a host of multiversal villains. With Tom Holland’s Peter Parker reaching a point where his identity is completely unknown, fans speculated that they would finally be getting street-level stories. However, this may not be the case.

While there were mystical villains like the Sandman and Venom in the Raimi-verse, they still had very personal stories and attacked Peter directly instead of being a world-ending threat.
