The world was mesmerized by the chemistry the two stars, Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling brought in for the 2004 movie and also deemed as the classic love story of all time, The Notebook. But turns out things weren’t so mystical on set as they seemed on the screen, the regular clashes between the two actors turned out to be a nightmare for everyone on set. Eventually, the supposed enemies turned into lovers, and the on-screen romance turned into a full-fledged off-screen saga that went on for several months.

After that, the duo never really appeared in front of the lens as a couple and the fans still lament that fact to this very day. Thus, when the Doctor Strange actor got to know, her old pal Gosling was almost cast as Doctor Strange, instead of Cumberbatch, she had a bizarre reaction.

The Notebook director dreaded the constant fights between Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams on set

Not only did the ‘reel-life’ romance between Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in The Notebook became a real-life one, but their many on-set fights have also made headlines. The director of the 2004 movie, Nick Cassavetes confessed, working with the two became extremely difficult. The ‘friendly’ fights went on to such an extent, that Gosling once tried to get rid of his co-star and refused to work until and unless some other actress was hired to replace the ‘incompatible’ McAdams. Cassavetes said to Daily Mail,

“Ryan came to me, and there’s 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, ‘Nick come here,—And he’s doing a scene with Rachel and he says, ‘Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me?’”

To nip the problem in the bud, the crew had to host an intervention for the leads and make them understand how their banter was affecting them. He continued saying,

“We went into a room with a producer, they started screaming and yelling at each other,–I walked out, I smoked a cigarette and everybody came out like, ‘All right let’s do this.’ And it got better after that, you know? They had it out.”

Over time, the tension between the two began to ease and they started to get along better than they could have ever anticipated, so much so, that they eventually decided to give dating a try and ended up being together for a number of months.

How did Rachel McAdams react to Ryan Gosling’s almost MCU entry?

After Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling parted ways in 2007, they went their separate paths to star in blockbusters that would change their individual career trajectories. One such role for McAdams was playing the love interest of Doctor Stange, Dr. Christine Palmer, in the highly anticipated 2016 movie, Doctor Strange. In the same year, Ryan Gosling went on to star in La La Land, which would end up winning several notable awards including six Academy Awards.

Thus, while promoting the Marvel movie, the Mean Girls star was found dumbstruck when informed that Gosling was initially considered for the role of Doctor Strange. In a Yahoo interview, the actress confessed her honest thoughts on whether it would bother her to work with her ex once again. She said,

“No! Not at all, I’d love to work with [Ryan] again,–I didn’t know that [he was linked with Doctor Strange]. Benedict was signed on when it came across my plate so he’s the only ever Doctor Strange I’ve known of.”

Thus, although the two started with animosity, there is no bad blood between the two anymore. And if an opportunity present itself, both McAdams and Gosling would jump on that in no time without any second thoughts. Fans hope they get to witness the magic they both bring on screen together soon enough.

The Notebook is available on Netflix, whereas, fans can catch Doctor Strange on Disney Plus to stream.
