With the success of the new show on the block, Netflix’s Beef starring many high-profile actors like Invincible star Steven Yeun and Always Be My Maybe star Ali Wong has received a lot of praise regarding how wonderfully they have depicted their lead roles in the series along with the execution of the humourous narrative. But now, it seems like they might also be receiving some backlash from the public.

After the recent video podcast of the show’s star David Choe resurfaced where he was narrating an experience where he had allegedly committed a crime of sexual assault, fans of the show as well as the public has been demanding that the stars say something about the whole ordeal. But it seems like both individuals have gone silent with these demands.

While the streaming giant prides itself in churning out content regularly to satisfy its consumers, there are only a handful of shows that Netflix can truly call the prized ones, and this year, Beef has seemed to take the title with reviews and reactions being overwhelmingly positive. But then, Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, who are executive producers of the hit show, seem to have gone dark by not talking about their friend and co-star David Choe’s heinous actions.

After the episode of Choe along with adult film star Asa Akira on her podcast reappeared on the internet, many people have been horrified about how the Dirty Hands star described a massage experience where he allegedly forcefully assaulted the masseuse. In the video, Choe describes in detail what he did, which might be unsettling for some, so the viewer’s discretion is advised before proceeding further. He recalled:

“It’s dangerous and it’s super self-destructive. I’m at a place and there’s potential for a lawsuit . . . and she has given me no signs that she’s into me or that this is appropriate behavior. In my head I go, Do you care if I jerk off right now? and it sounds so creepy in my head that I go, I can’t say that out loud . . . So I go back to the chill method of you never ask first, you just do it, get in trouble and then pay the price later. So I just start j—— off. So then her hands get off my leg and she just stops . . . I go ‘Look I’m sorry I can’t help myself — can you just pretend like I’m not doing this and you continue with the massage?’ And she’s like ‘All right’ and she does . . . I’m like ‘Can I touch your butt?’ and I reach out and touch her butt and she pulls away. She doesn’t want me to touch her butt. I take the back of her head and I push it down on my d— and she doesn’t do it. And I say, ‘Open your mouth, open your mouth,’ and she does it and I start face——- her.”

After the video went viral, Choe allegedly demanded the video be taken down from everywhere, including from Akira’s show as he denies sexually assaulting anyone. Amidst all of this, both Yeun and Wong, who brought Choe into the show, have decided to stay silent, with Wong even going far enough to make her Twitter page a private account.

While the recent controversies surrounding the stars of the show might’ve tarnished the series’s memory, people still call it one of the best shows Netflix has put out in the recent past. Thanks to its unique comedy/drama narrative with a psychological drama subtext just under the surface, the show has managed to take the audience onto a rollercoaster ride of emotions as the first season ended, something that not many shows have done before.
