The MCU has featured many iconic villains in its long list of movies including Dormammu, Loki, Eric Killmonger, and the Mad Titan Thanos. On the other hand, despite having an interesting background and strong motivation, Ultron failed to carry his own movie.

Age of Ultron was criticized for having a far more complicated and confusing plot by many viewers.

The sentient android from Avengers: Age of Ultron, was the creation of Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, who was intended to protect the earth from outside incursions. But Ultron ended up fighting the Avengers and raising a city to cause a mini-apocalypse.

How Ultron was shown the future by the Mind Stone

It was revealed in WandaVision that the Scarlet Witch had dormant powers, which the mind stone had unlocked. This indicates the mind stone influenced her actions and this creates an interesting connection hinting at Ultron knowing more than we thought.

WandaVision also revealed that the mind stone gave Wanda a vision of the future where she would become the Scarlet Witch. All of these facts hint at the idea that anyone with the mind stone or the power of the mind stone can see a portion or a version of the future.

Tony Stark was also shown a vision of impending doom in Avengers: Age of Ultron after Wanda hypnotized him.

When Wanda Maximoff uses her power to put Thor into a trance in Age of Ultron, the God of Thunder gets the vision of the Infinity Gauntlet and of the android, Vision. On the other hand, Ultron was able to make Vision exactly how Thor had seen in his trip. Coincidence? We think not!

Along with the vision of the Infinity Gauntlet, Thor was also shown that the Mind Stone would lead to great destruction. We saw this come true as after Thanos gets the Mind Stone in Infinity War, he kills half the population of all lifeforms.

Was Ultron secretly trying to save Earth?

Considering the ability of the Mind Stone to show visions of the future and allude to a greater threat, it’s not farfetched to assume that Ultron was also shown the visions of a much higher threat: Thanos.

What If...?
Thanos being sliced in half by Ultron’s mind stone in What If…?

Considering the Mind Stone’s clairvoyant powers, it can be assumed that Ultron had a premonition that a sentient android (Vision) played a crucial part in saving Earth from the Mad Titan. However, keeping in mind Ultron’s own arrogance, it is quite plausible that the intelligent android considered himself the savior who would fight Thanos. Interestingly, another fan theory suggests that Ultron was coded to ‘protect Earth’ instead of protecting humanity, which resulted in Ultron going rogue against the Avengers as he perceived humankind to be the biggest threat to the planet.

So in his own messed-up way, Ultron might have been trying to protect Earth at the cost of the human race from the Mad Titan. After witnessing Ultron dissecting Thanos in half in What If…?, there’s a good possibility that the sentient android could have held his ground against Thanos, and his quest for the Infinity Stones.
