Marvel Cinematic Universe fans who loved Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man are in for a sweet present tomorrow. Recently, Marvel Studios announced that they would be dropping the trailer for the sequel for the 2015 superhero sleuth, Ant-Man & The Wasp. This news comes on the heels of the 10th anniversary of the launch of the widely successful franchise of superhero comedies which started in 2008 with Jon Favreau’s Iron Man. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has since then broken critical and financial records and spawned successful spin-off television shows such as Agents of SHIELD and Daredevil with more to come as three new installments are to release this year with the upcoming Black Panther, The Avengers: Infinity War, and Ant-Man & The Wasp. It is a big year for the franchise which has been leading up to the colossal event in the third installment to The Avengers trilogy.

With Black Panther releasing in just a few weeks, and The Avengers: Infinity War following close behind it in May, the final installment for the MCU’s 2018 release schedule would be Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man & The Wasp with star Paul Raud and Evangeline Lilly teaming up to reprise their roles as Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne respectively. Lilly who was in a more supportive role in the previous Ant-Man film will assume a much larger role in the film as she will finally suit up as The Wasp. Obviously now that the marketing campaign for Black Panther has wrapped up and a trailer for The Avengers: Infinity War, it makes perfect sense for the lesser talked about MCU film of 2018 to finally release it’s trailer after official photos being released as well as set photos leaking on to multiple forums.

At tonight’s world premiere for Black Panther, the Marvel Studios Instagram account had been providing coverage of the festivities and of leading actor Chadwick Boseman as he got ready for the premiere and made his victory lap down the red carpet. In their final addition the Marvel Studios Instagram story, the camera had panned to a small, ant-sized poster for Ant-Man & The Wasp, then quickly moving to a card with the words “trailer tomorrow.”

The announcement to release the trailer for the film is unexpected and definitely on short-notice but it’s not necessarily surprising for Marvel Studios to market a film like this. It is to be noted that The Avengers: Infinity War trailer was not released until Thor: Ragnarok released in theaters, but that decision was presumably made to avoid spoilers for a critical story point in Thor: Ragnarok, in which Thor loses his eye. However, trailers for films such as Black Panther, Thor: Ragnarok, and Spider-Man: Homecoming all respectively had their trailers release way before their films made their big debuts in theaters worldwide. The Avengers Infinity War trailer was an oddity among them.

The decision to announce the trailer for Ant-Man & The Wasp at the premiere for another highly anticipated MCU installment like Black Panther is certainly a smart marketing tactic. It serves as a way for Marvel Studios to maintain a constant flow of hype that can spread to not just one film as it is about to hit theaters but also to create some extra positive momentum for a film that is months away from release and is also the last MCU film for the year. It certainly would need it. While not everyone has been talking about Ant-Man & The Wasp and shown some serious excitement it is certain that tomorrow’s trailer will still get fans hyped up and cause them to produce all sorts of speculations about the plot and everyone’s role in it.
