With some heavy hitters being delivered in the month of September, the excitement is starting to build behind the sequel to the extremely popular PlayStation exclusive Marvel’s Spider-man which will be hitting shelves in October. This is everything you need to know about the game prior to its release.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Will be released on October 20th Exclusively on PlayStation 5
Exclusivity! – With the previous games all releasing on PlayStation 4 and also being ported and updated on the PlayStation 5 turns out that this time around Insomniac and PlayStation have made the choice to keep it exclusively on the one console. It makes perfect sense considering the expansion they would logically be putting into the game.
The Map – Confirmed by Insomniac games and seen in the trailers the map is expanding to open up more of New York City, while some areas were restricted in the first game more areas such as Brooklyn and Queens are being made accessible.
Characters – Returning are the two main playable characters the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man ‘Peter Parker’ and his trusted trainee Spider-man ‘Miles Morales’ are both playable throughout the main story, one thing we got to witness during the gameplay reveal of the game was that both characters will have individual parts throughout segments of the game that will require switch-ups in real-time. Mary Jane Watson will be making a return, in the original, she had key parts you would play as her character, but nothing regarding this has been confirmed for the sequel yet.
A new character being introduced to the story is Peter’s best friend Harry Osborn, son of NYC Mayor and owner of Oscorp Norman Osborn seen in the first outing. Harry will play a more prominent role in the sequel, According to both Peter and MJ he had been away saving the world but upon returning to New York and according to the trailers he has a few hidden secrets he is keeping from his best friends.
Gameplay – To Insomniac’s credit they have allowed us to see segments of both story and gameplay in their marketing for the game. Returning are the large set pieces and huge action sets you expect from them. Alongside that, we have seen new gadgets for both Peter and Miles including the new suits which have new and improved features including the wingsuit attachments to glide rather than swing.
Story – Looking to take the reins in trying to cause chaos in New York this time around is ‘Kraven The Hunter’ taking a very extreme approach in being bored with preying on humans and the like he sets his sights on Spider-Man for the ultimate game of cat and mouse. From the official story trailer, we have also seen returning characters such as ‘Martin Li’ (Mr Negative) as well as Norman Osborn, so we may be seeing more of the famous rogue’s gallery as the game progresses.
With the Miles Morales story intertwined in the first game and given his own outing later on to see the two characters taking centre stage in this new outing the game is likely to be huge in both exploration and story.
Villains – According to the trailers we have seen so far it seems that ‘Kraven The Hunter’ is likely to be the main villain this time around and he seems to be shaping up as a formidable foe. New Villains that have also been shown so far have been the ‘Lizard’ which would give us the debut of ‘Dr Curtis Connors’. Finally, lined up to create quite a stir in the famous symbiotic personality ‘Venom’ however we are yet to see any sign or introduction to ‘Eddie Brock’ to who Venom is famously known to be attached, could Insomniac games be throwing a new character into the suit? Only time will tell.
In the original, we also got our introduction to the Sinister 6, Dr Octopus, The Shocker, The Scorpion, Rhino, Mr Negative and the Vulture. Nothing has been confirmed regarding the whole gang making a return however one of the characters (Mr Negative) is shown powerless in the trailer so a possible reforming of this supergroup may be on the cards.
Release date – The game is officially due to exclusively on the PlayStation 5 on October 20th 2023 worldwide.
