Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is just around the corner as we get closer to its October 20th release date. Ever since the story trailer, fans have been wondering who Venom is in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. It can’t be Eddie Brock because Insomniac Games confirmed he’s not Venom.

Fans are looking at Harry Osborn as Venom’s host in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Venom’s co-creator, Todd McFarlane, spoke to ComicBook about this well-known theory. McFarlane said:

I’m a fan…if Harry Osborn, that character on his best recanting, is really almost on the verge of insane. And you put that character into the suit of Venom, then I think you’ve got a pretty badass version. I think that’s a heck of a combo.”

Harry Osborn has been Venom before in other Spider-Man media, notably the 2012 Ultimate Spider-Man animated series. Insomniac Games has yet to reveal who Venom is in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, but McFarlane is onto something with this popular fan theory.

In the post-credits scene of Marvel’s Spider-Man, fans get their first in-game look at Harry Osborn as he’s floating in a test chamber. What appears to be the black symbiote attached to him is that his father, Norman Osborn, has been looking for a cure to help his son.

As Norman’s hand presses on the glass, the black tendrils touch it too. This was the first time fans believed Harry would be Venom’s host in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Two months ago, when the trailer dropped, fans finally received a full look at Harry Osborn in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Harry Osborn closes his opening speech with “we’re going to heal the world.” Then, the final words of the trailer are also the same, but in the voice of Venom.

The parallels are all here to set up Harry Osborn as Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. But could Insomniac Games be playing tricks on us?

To those who don’t know, McFarlane has been in the comic book industry since the late 1980s. He is well known for his work in The Amazing Spider-Man and his anti-hero character, Spawn.

McFarlane created Venom alongside writer David Michelinie to go up against Spider-Man in the comic book run at the time. Venom would make his first cameo in The Amazing Spider-Man #299, following up with a full appearance in #300.

McFarlane has not worked directly with Marvel since his work on The Amazing Spider-Man in the late 1980s and early 1990s. McFarlane has since moved on from Spider-Man but still talks about his past work and the creation of Venom. He doesn’t have any idea how far Insomniac Games will take Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, but he here’s what he would do:

I’d make Harry Osborn insane, put the costume on him, and then he would just be a wrecking ball at that point. And it would be very hard for Spider-Man to stop him at that point.”

McFarlane’s line of thinking is what most fans are expecting for Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. A story filled with heart, drama, and personal stakes as our Spider-Men take on new enemies in the PlayStation 5 exclusive. Only time will tell for fans to discover who Venom’s true identity is in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 when it releases on October 20.
