Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Venom May Not Have an Obvious Host, and Their Fate May Not be Open and Shut

Insomniac Games’ next title, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, is only three months away (October 20) and has already become one of the most anticipated releases of the year. Miles Morales and Peter Parker will be going up against Kraven the Hunter, Lizard, Venom and several others in the next installment to the franchise. Marketing videos and hints at various villains have led to several interesting fan theories.

One such theory is that since Insomniac has announced Eddie Brock will not be Venom’s host, the true host will be Peter Parker’s close friend, Harry Osborn. Although Eddie Brock is the usual carrier of the notorious symbiote, this change for the antagonist could be a fresh perspective in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, as it shows the conflict of right and wrong through the lens of friendship.

Fans have already had the chance to see how Venom will impact the game’s story, through a trailer/gameplay video which was released at the Sony PlayStation Showcase this year. The footage showed Peter Parker in the black symbiote Spider-Man suit, and Miles Morales quick to notice his friend was not acting normal. Since insomniac dropped viewers right in the middle of the action, there is no way of knowing how Peter came into contact with the symbiote, or how long he will be affected by the alien. It is very likely he will only stay connected to Venom, until an introduction to Osborn has been made and a new bond is formed.

Insomniac Games Is Keeping Things Fresh in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Which Means Venom Is Likely Here to Stay

Those who loved the first Marvel’s Spider-Man game Insomniac made, have confidence the studio will continue to create high-quality content. The developer has already shown it is willing to take chances and change expected Spider-Man lore for surprising twists, and new takes on characters. One way fans are expecting Insomniac to change the rules, is by keeping Venom alive, by the end of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

There have been several iterations of the Venom character that have died, which means if Insomniac went in this direction, it would be all too familiar to what fans have already seen. This most recent theory suggests the antagonist will survive through the game, as a way to establish additional characters in future installments, such as Eddie Brock and Carnage.

It is impossible to tell at this point how the game’s plot will develop, but it is clear Insomniac wants to do new things with the Spider-Man IP. This title will have new ways to traverse the city, the map will be much larger than the previous installment, and players will have the opportunity to switch between Miles Morales and Peter Parker at different points in the game.

Although it is unclear exactly how the character switching will work, Insomniac has already experimented with a similar mechanic in its latest release, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. The fact the developer is continuing to work on the gameplay in new and innovative ways, means this title will players feeling even more like they are the famed web swinger.
