The third chapter in “The Greatest Generation Trilogy,” Masters of the Air, depicts some of the most awe-inspiring and greatest air combat scenes ever made by exploring how these airmen find themselves flying so close to heaven yet amid the depths of hell. Masters of the Air honors its subject and itself with some of the finest historical storytelling you’ll see on streaming.

Adapted by John Orloff from the nonfiction best-seller Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany by historian Donald Miller, the series effectively captures vast conflicts, dangerous aerial battles, and the harsh realities confronted by the airmen from all walks of life.

Apple TV+ describes Masters of the Air as “portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, emphasizing that it’s at the heart of the series. Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll exacted on them all.”

  • We are introduced to Maj. John “Bucky” Egan (Callum Turner) and Maj. Gale “Buck” Cleven (Austin Butler), best friends are celebrating before heading off to war. While Bucky, going first, keeps the horrors of war to himself, Gale faces his first mission months later.
  • Lt. Harry Crosby (Anthony Boyle), a navigator on a B17 Flying Fortress, battles air sickness on a dangerous mission, leading them off course unexpectedly. Major Bill Veal, in charge of the 349th squadron, suffers engine failure, compelling him to turn back. The German Luftwaffe attacks both squadrons, resulting in only two of Veal’s bombers returning.
  • The aftermath of the last mission takes a toll on the men, with some grappling with debilitating frostbite on their hands and legs. Bucky, known for wild antics, gets drunk and challenges Lt. Curtis Biddick to a boxing match on the bomber plane wing. Curt puts him in his place with a single punch, earning a wink from his buddy.
  • Gale, Curt, and Bucky lead the squadron to Norway to bomb German submarines off the coast. Bubbles, still recovering from frostbite, and Curt’s plane is damaged by German AA gun Flak fire, forcing an emergency landing in a Scottish field.
  • Crosby, dealing with air sickness and radio trouble, assists Buck with calculations and guides them to safety. Returning to the party, he receives compliments for maintaining a cool head under pressure.
  • The series explains the U.S. preference for daytime bombings due to precise targeting, while the British, favoring nighttime for safety, is considered reckless. The second episode concludes with Buck and Bucky discussing the perceived suicide nature of daytime bombings.

Predictions for Masters of the Air Season 1 Episode 3:

  • The next episode has the characters flying extensive missions over German airspace and ending in Telergam, located in Northern Africa. This seems especially dangerous considering the losses they have already incurred. Expect significant character deaths in the episode.
  • Will Marge (1883’s Isabel May) wait for Gale? There is a historical trope of couples breaking up because they wait for their partners to return home. Yes, most women would never break up with Austin Butler, but it’s something to ponder. They stay together.
  • Will Crosby continue his ascent? When we first met the nervous man, we thought he was the death of many men. Except now, with quick thinking under pressure, he has been their salvation. He will continue to help save his fellow soldiers by guiding them to safety during battles.
