Matt Reeves Said The Batman 2 Will Not Repeat Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight’ Mistake: “Batman takes a backseat sort of character-wise”

Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy or Matt Reeves’ The Batman? That’s the dilemma many are undergoing. While Nolan’s Batman films set the bar high, Reeves’ film has set a different standard and it has been appreciated immensely as well. Many think his Batman films can even surpass Nolan’s.

The Robert Pattinson-led and Matt Reeves-directed The Batman was one of the only successes for DC in recent memory. The 2022 film made on a budget of $200 million grossed $766 million. A sequel was confirmed as well. So what’s coming in the next movie? Something Nolan failed to do.

In an interview with Collider, Matt Reeves stated that he feels that Robert Pattinson is the soul of the films. So he wants his Batman to be the core of the stories. He said:

“To me, the thing that I really feel is that I also believe that Rob [Pattinson] is so special in the role. My goal has always been to do these point-of-view stories that allow the character to always be the emotional center of the story.”

He explained that sometimes Batman villains tend to take the spotlight away from him and that disbalances the narrative. While he doesn’t outright take Christopher Nolan‘s name, it’s well-known that villains like Joker and Bane took center stage in Christian Bale‘s Batman movies. Reeves said:

“Because a lot of times what happens is, after you do the first one, then suddenly other Rogues Gallery characters come in, and they kind of take over, and then Batman takes a backseat sort of character-wise, or emotionally.”

As such, Matt Reeves wants to prevent history from repeating again. It is definitely a smart move too because audiences have fallen in love with Pattinson’s dark knight and they would love to see him stay as the core of the film. However, does this mean the Rogues’ gallery will be underutilized?

In the first film, Matt Reeves was praised for giving a new dimension to comparatively lesser-known Batman villains like Carmine Falcone and the Penguin. While their story in the film itself was well-fleshed out, the director didn’t stop there. An HBO Max show titled The Penguin will be coming soon. It will take place almost immediately after the end of The Batman and is rumored to be about a gang war to take control of Gotham City.

While it hasn’t been confirmed which villains will be a part of The Batman 2, it’s possible that their stories will be fleshed out in an HBO Max series as well. It will help expand the world of Robert Pattinson‘s Batman and give fans more time to connect to these characters and understand their motivations better.

The Batman is streaming on HBO Max.
