Director Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle is officially out but so far, things are not looking good. The movie’s rating on Rotten Tomatoes is an embarrassing 34%. This is calculated using critics’ reviews and the audience score is yet to be calculated. This wasn’t Vaughn’s first action comedy film as the director created the successful Kingsman movie franchise, which is based on the comic series of the same name.
Despite negative reviews, Vaughn has confirmed that he would create a sequel. In one of his recent interviews, the director seemingly confirmed that the Kingsman and Argylle franchises exist in the same universe, hinting that in the future, fans could see the two worlds colliding. The rating could fluctuate over the next few weeks, but the initial reviews have been terrible. However, perhaps Vaughn can fix the mistakes he made by intertwining the next Argylle movie with the Kingsman series.
Matthew Vaughn revealed that Kingsman and Argylle franchises exist in the same universe
During his recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, director Matthew Vaughn confirmed that there is a possibility of the Kingsman and Argylle franchises colliding one day. The director said,
“We have an Argylle 2 planned so there is a universe – so we’ve got the kingsman on the right, I’d say, Argylle on the left and then we’ve got an idea for something in the middle as well – you’ve got these sort of competing franchises in a galaxy that one day might meet.”
The director has confirmed that he is planning to create two sequels for Argylle, but so far, Argylle has been doomed with negative reviews. As of now, the film has a critic rating of 34% on Rotten Tomatoes. Obviously, the audience rating will be different but initial reviews of the film have been embarrassing.
What went wrong with Argylle?
For Vaughn, Argylle is a type of film he has never worked on. In the same interview, the director explained that the film is very different from all of the films in his filmography as he tried to “reinvent” the idea of a spy film,
“Most of my movies are always – I call them a love letter to the movies I loved as a kid or which I felt could be reinvented – We just came up with this, it is a very meta movie so it’s got lots of tropes that I’ve been guilty of making with spy movies which we’re sort of trying to reinvent.”
So what’s wrong with Argylle? Many have called it a “silly over-the-top action movie” that was hyped up for no reason. Although the film was a refreshing change from other classic spy movies, it just wasn’t good for some people. Some people have praised the movie, particularly the talented cast. Argylle was released in the United States on 2nd February 2024.
