James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe has set the bar high as the co-CEO has talked about his plans to relaunch the iconic comic book characters in their original portrayals on the big screen. The plans will contrast with Zack Snyder’s SnyderVerse as the filmmaker planned to showcase darker elements which gathered a mixed response from the fans and the critics. Gunn has noticed the shortcomings, as promises the DC fans that he will be bringing a wider range of tones and diversity with proper planning that doomed DCEU.

Since the Slither director has promised to bring success to his DCU, Joel Kinnaman who played the role of Rick Flag in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad has expressed his desire to join the DCU. While his character died at the end, the return is favorable as he wants to be the villain in the rebooted DCU.

Joel Kinnaman Wants To Be a Part of James Gunn’s DCU

Joel Kinnaman portrayed the role of Rick Flag in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad followed by James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. While the portrayal of the character was outstanding, in a shocking turn of events Flag was killed by John Cena’s Peacemaker. Recently, Kinnaman appeared as a guest on the Post-Credit Podcast, where he expressed his feelings about his character’s death and how he desires to return to DCU not as Rick Flag but portraying some “nasty villain.”

“Yeah,” Kinnaman laughed. “I love that scene, though. It was such a good way to go. But, for sure, maybe I’ll come back and play some nasty villain in a couple of years.”

While it is difficult to say how serious Kinnaman was when he stated his wish to work with James Gunn again, the idea is possible as Gunn tends to enjoy working with old faces. Moreover, the portrayal of the actor was immensely loved by the fans so it looks like a feasible plan if The Suicide Squad director plans to hire the actor as one of the iconic villains.

Can DC Fans Expect To See Joel Kinnaman in James Gunn’s DCU

Since James Gunn has the tendency to frequently work with the same names again, there is a very high probability that Gunn might end up hiring the Robocop actor for a possible appearance in the DCU. Moreover, a return as Rick Flag would not be even out of the assumption, as Gunn had stated that his DCU would mark a new beginning that might feature some old faces from the DCEU.

Hence, the idea of a Rick Flag variant might still be on the table. However, the idea of Kinnaman playing a menacing villain in the new DCU would be great as he tends to embody the assigned role. Moreover, if the actor returns as a possible variant, the idea of Peacemaker killing the character would be undermined which would again make the fans question the timeline and the planning of DC Studios.

Since there is neither any official announcement from Gunn nor the DC Studio, it would be advisable to wait and observe which actors would join the new DCU.
