One thing about the MCU that its fans unanimously agree on is that Captain America: The Winter Soldier is one of the best ever made! The movie is undeniably a perfect 10, and Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne is partly responsible for that. While crafting the movie, the creators kept their lens wide for inspiration, drawing from whatever captivated them, and the Bourne films were one of those inspirations. The Russo brothers made sure not to miss a mark. And they didn’t, the rest is history!
Here’s How Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne Inspired Captain America: The Winter Soldier!
The movie that played the most crucial role in Phase 2 of the MCU was Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The film had everything. It adeptly tackled numerous challenges, while also maintaining an excellent storyline and jam-packed action sequences to keep the audiences captivated. And that is where Matt Damon‘s suave and sophisticated espionage comes in.
The recently released book, MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, revealed that the Russo brothers, while crafting the film, drew inspiration from every corner, including some good old-fashioned Bourne fight scenes as well as MMA bouts.
To be honest, the Bourne series consists of pretty good fighting scenes. The assassin himself, played by Damon, has been seen over the years possessing a wide range of skills from boxing to Kali. There is nothing Bourne can’t do, and that essence was what the Russo brothers aimed to bring to the second Captain America film as well.
Other Inspirations Behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier
In an interview with Empire Magazine (via Movie Web), Marvel Studios President of Production, Kevin Feige, discussed how they went about crafting the movie and the various inspirations that adorned their storyboard. He said,
“In our attempt to make all of our films feel unique and feel different we found ourselves going back to things like [Three Days of the Condor]. Also the other political thrillers of the ’70s: The Parallax View, All The President’s Men.”
Joe Russo further added to the conversation stating,
“Why is that car chase so effective? Because you care about who’s in the car. The Conversation, Blow Out for a kind of tone; how sound design helps to build the paranoia. So we’re building things into the back speakers that you kind of don’t hear. We’re both real fans of [Michael Mann’s] Heat and the heist sequence in that, the vérité style.”
Indeed, this Captain America movie is one of a kind with its unique theme and settings. Exploring Captain America in such a way broke the MCU mold and shed light on something that had never been seen before until then.
