Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez used to be not only good friends but also some of the most commendable rappers of all time.
But this all came to an end with a mishap on an early morning in 2020 when the former got injured in a shooting incident by the latter, which put a serious strain on their relationship as well as their reputations — especially Lanez’s.
Yet even though Thee Stallion did get injured in the incident and Lanez was eventually proven guilty and sentenced to do time, there were several aspects and perspectives and truths and lies along with multiple different outlet coverages to this story as well.
Thus, here is the simplified version of everything we know about the shooting incident, why it happened, and what it led to for both of the rappers.
All We Know About Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez’s Shooting Incident
It all started on the night of the 12th of July, 2020, when Megan Thee Stallion sat in the car of Tory Lanez along with her friend and his bodyguard, after having enjoyed a pool party at Kylie Jenner’s house, as reported by Vulture.
Sometime during their conversation, the four of them got into an alleged squabble that started as the 28-year-old American rapper criticized Lanez over his rap abilities and apparently ended with Thee Stallion walking out of the car, as reported by The New York Times.
But that was hardly the case as the Savage singer ended up getting shot in the foot by someone who allegedly fired several shots at her feet through the car’s back window. A little over a month later, Thee Stallion got into an Instagram Live to identify Lanez as the shooter.
While she claimed that she didn’t hit Lanez nor was the shooting related to the Canadian rapper’s alleged love interest Kylie Jenner, the criminal complaint filed identified Lanez as having reportedly “inflicted great bodily injury upon” Thee Stallion, who was born as Megan Pete (via Vulture).
Initially, though, the Sweetest Pie singer’s very first statement that she gave the police when the neighbors called the cops after hearing the gunshots claimed that her injury happened from broken glass and not gunshots.
However, she had a reason for this as well, as she revealed in the live video that she thought the LAPD was “aggressive,” while adding: “I’m scared. All this shit going on with the police… I didn’t want to die. I didn’t want the police to shoot me ’cause there’s a n**** with a gun in the car with me.”
Further reports by TMZ reveal that Lanez was also reported as being intoxicated throughout the incident, with him later even apologizing to her and “allegedly offering her money to keep her mouth shut because he was on probation.”
Nonetheless, while Tory Lanez continued to plead not guilty throughout the time the case aired, Megan Thee Stallion still proved victorious as the Canadian rapper ended up getting convicted of multiple charges and is serving jail time as of this writing.

Tory Lanez’s Assault Trial Resulted In A 10 Year Jail Sentence
After many delays and house arrest for Tory Lanez, the Hurts Me singer was finally convicted and proven guilty, and eight months later, in August 2023, the Los Angeles Superior Court sentenced him to 10 years in prison in the Megan Thee Stallion shooting case.
His conviction has been for three charges respectively, as per the Los Angeles Times: assault with a semiautomatic firearm, carrying an unregistered firearm, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
However, in this 10-year sentence, journalist @meghanncuniff on X reported that “Lanez will be credited for 231 days he’s already spent in jail, and he gets 15% credit of 34 days. Herriford also is crediting his 40 days of house arrest, for a total of 305 days.”
Even after Lanez maintained his innocence and appealed for a bail which was heard a week later, he was still told to get comfortable with prison; the same place where he is currently spending his time. As for Megan Thee Stallion, she is currently busy promoting her latest track, HISS.
