Streep’s spokesperson, who was engaged to Don Gummer for the better part of four decades, announced that the two split back in 2017 but decided to keep things out from the media eye. Mery Streep Lost the Love of Her Life in Her Initial Days in Hollywood

For the unversed, before tying the knot with Will Smith, The Nutty Professor was romantically inclined with late rapper Tupac Shakur, who tragically died back in 1996. Mery Streep too lost the love of her life, The Godfather Star John Cazale, back in 1978 due to lung cancer. But the time that Streep spent with Cazale prior to his tragic demise, went on to shape the Hollywood icon the way she is. From taking him to his doctor’s appointment to paying his medical bills by taking on acting gigs, Streep devoted herself to The Deer Hunter in his final years.

Per The New York Post, reflecting on the duo’s bond, Al Pacino explained,

“When I saw that girl there with him like that I thought, ‘There’s nothing like that.’ I mean, that’s it for me. As great as she is in all her work, that’s what I think of when I think of her.”

But since the tragic loss, Streep hasn’t quite touched this chapter of her life publically due to obvious reasons.
