Metal Gear Solid may be one of the most iconic game series of all time, but it has been a while since fans got any kind of new or original content from it.

Since the upcoming MGS Delta: Snake Eater is also set to be a remake of the similarly titled 2004 game, it does not seem like the community will be getting a fresh story from the franchise any time soon, and considering how the last installment, MGS V: The Phantom Pain, was released nearly nine years ago in 2015, the fanbase’s hopes are not exactly too high.

However, RoboCop: Rogue City‘s unexpected success just last year may have ignited something in the gaming industry: what if other 80s action flicks also got adapted into video games?

It’s Not a New Metal Gear Solid, But Snake Could Be Making a Return in a Potential Escape From New York Adaptation

Metal Gear Solid's Snake takes clear inspiration from Kurt Russell's Plissken, the protagonist of Escape From New York.

Pop culture enthusiasts are probably aware of the fact that the iconic protagonist from the Metal Gear Solid series shares an uncanny resemblance with Kurt Russell’s Snake Plissken from the 1981 sci-fi action film Escape from New York, which was directed by John Carpenter. Not only do they look quite similar in appearance, but references to the classic movie are also sprinkled in throughout the games, with creator Hideo Kojima admitting that he is a fan of Carpenter’s films.

From the name to the eyepatch and even the codename Iroquois Pliskin in MGS 2: Sons of Liberty, the characters share a lot in common, and it seems like Plissken could be making a return in a potential video game adaptation of the film.

Although nothing has officially been announced yet, there have been rumors about Carpenter’s EfNY being adapted into a game, as some concept art has made its way online. The aesthetics in the leaked shots are reminiscent of Avatar Press’ Crossed comics, with plenty of firefights, explosions, and eerie atmospheres for players to get immersed in.

It is still not exactly clear how far the game is into its development or even if it is still being made, but another rumor suggests that Slipgate Ironworks, the studio behind Ghostrunner, could be helming the project.

Rogue City Walked, So EfNY Could Maybe Run

RoboCop: Rogue City proved that action flicks from the 80s could actually work quite well as video games.

It may have felt like Rogue City would have been a complete disaster, but the title defied all expectations and garnered positive reviews from both critics and players, proving that 80’s action films work really well as video games.

Seeing the concept art, which is quite faithful to the original film, shows that maybe an EfNY game could actually work.

At least the shots of the Crazies and Kurt Russell’s Plissken look like they have been taken directly from the movie.
